Uhhh, get some anti Virii? I've seen a Trojan infected machine before that would type, which either way, updated Anti Virus would solve.

Gore I had same thoughts as soon as I saw this post - trojanQuote:

Alot of the most popular trojans have the ability to send keystrokes to open applications
but the fact she says offline puzzles me - as she would need to be online for the kiddie to be connected to send keystrokes.
There are several viruses however which send keystrokes all the time (reminds me of an old joke program which would replace whatever you typed with a rude word as you typed)
Best thing you can do atm is do a full virus scan :
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
then i suggest gettign some antivirus software like AVG
but if you dont tell us what OS/Defences you are running which makes it hard to answer the question
if your running an unsecured box (no firewall/antivirus/etc) I suggest a full format and reinstall as who knows what else you ahve picked up.

I use Norton System Works 2005 & Norton Personal Firewall 2005Quote:

Problem is this has benn going on for almost 2 monthes now & I can't figure out which virus it is. It's starting to really bug me. I really don't want to have to restore the computer.
Update your antivirus to the latest definitions, reboot into safemode and then run a full system scan. If you find a virus delete it. If its been out for two months, chances are norton has a fix for it (they have surely been able to steal McAfee and AVGs definitions in that amount of time ;) )
if that doesnt work than download hijackthis and copy the log here, but PLEASE do the full system scan IN SAFEMODE first.
Take a trip over to www.moosoft.com and download the 30 day trial of "The Cleaner", make sure you have the latest updates and do a full scan of your system. AV software WILL NOT catch all trojans.
allenb~ is spot on :)
AV products are generally not very good with trojans, and Norton is very mediocre.
Moosoft is good, for a nice free AT specialist:

A-squared
Also:
http://www.ewido.net/en/
The interactive bit only works for the 14 day trial, but the on demand scanner can be updated and used for free after that.
:)
EDIT: Run these two and your AV in SAFE MODE
Again, like others, I have a problem with this...
Everyone is jumping to conclusions before knowing facts ( yes, I know, I’m guilty of that too sometimes )
First, you said online and offline. How do you know you are off-line? Did you physically pull the ethernet/phone cable?
Second, What are you using? Here, the OS may provide some information, as well as antivirus, software, what you have tried to find the problem in the past months, etc.
But the hardware may provide more: are you using a wireless keyboard and mouse? If so, how close to any others ( or other interference mediums ) are you?
If hard wired keyboard and mouse, when was the last time you spilled something on them?
If the Hardware is OK, maybe it is a trojan, but what is it typing? Could it be bad drivers? Conflicting software? What exactly is being typed?
Need more input!!!!
( After reading your profile, maybe someone cast a spell on it?? )
IKnowNot
I hear what you are saying, but I still tend to run the precautionary stuff if only to eliminate malware as a possible cause.
:)
Yes, I agree ........... but did she?
( will this post upset SuperDooper ? )
1. The system is equipped with Norton System Works and that includes NAV.
2. It types by itself online or offline.
If the NAV is configured for auto-update, then it would have obtained the latest definition whenever you go online.
In that case, and if a full system scan fails to reveal a virus, think of only one possibility: You have a stuck-up key (it types only a letter or moves the cursor back, right? you failed to indicate whether that "typing by itself" means it is like doing random keystrokes or just a "singular keystroke" behavior).
I've gone through this "typing" phenomenon before, be it with laptops (supposed to be with "spillproof" keyboards) and hardwired desktop keyboards. Invariably, the culprit is spillage... in my case, the worst offender is always beer (followed by coffee) due to the sticky residue that stays after the spillage dried up. My best move for desktops? BUY A NEW KEYBOARD.
I know, this isn't much help. But if virus scanning with an updated NAV finds nothing, then it's time to look at the hardware itself.

Thankyou for that nice remark!!!!!!Quote:

Anyways............
I do not use anything wireless. I use AOL so i know if i'm online or offline.
I think it has somethin to do w/ this file sapisvr.exe but i can't seem to locate it.
Lightning_Girl,
sapisvr.exe is a legit process:
Also, I'm going on the same angle as Goitz & IKnowNot are. There simply is not enough information to determine if this keystroke problem is even a virus/trojan in the first place. I've dealt with a similar problem once where the user was convinced it was a virus when in fact, she spilled water on the keyboard and it was causing keys to stick and act strangely.Quote:
sapisvr - sapisvr.exe - Process Information
Process File: sapisvr or sapisvr.exe
Process Name: Windows Speech Recognition
Description:
sapisvr.exe is a process belonging to Windows XP. It provides speech recognition functionalities. This program is non-essential process to the running of the system, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems
You have two options here:
1) You can run HiJackThis as posted in this thread and also elaborate a little more on the exact nature of the problem and your system setup so we can help you diagnose it.
2) You can just assume it is a virus and trash all Norton/Symantec products for the hell of it which seems to be the growing trend lately.
Hey,
ShagDevil
Maybe you have hit on something there. If she has voice recognition software running and the mike is turned on, backgound noise might have some weird effects?
just a thought :)
It's a simple job to clean a gunked up keyboard.Quote:
My best move for desktops? BUY A NEW KEYBOARD.
Just disconnect it from the box. Take it apart and wash off dry off spray with silicone spray and re-assemble. Dam sight less expensive.
Hi jinxy
Perhaps the next step would be to borrow a keyboard from somewhere else and try that. It will sort out the spillage/whatever issue straight away?
OK I suppose I have an advantage in that I have built up a decent collection of redundant mice and keyboards from dead machines and upgrades, so that is the first thing I try when I have an input medium problem. I have even had instances where swapping the keyboard has resulted in BOTH machines working fine.............I guess they are not that well made these days :(
Lightning_Girl
Please try another keyboard..................then make sure that your microphone is unplugged, and that sapisvr.exe is not running.
Win Patrol

Is a nice little tool for suspending and starting programs to sort out conflicts and other problems
;)
:D
nihil and ShagDevil: I was in the process of answering LG's latest post when my messenger flashed twice regarding this topic. However,
LG:
sapisvr.exe is a legit MS process program designed for speech/voice recognition instruction. That is, however, only if and only when it is in its proper location. If you're using Microsoft Windows XP, that program file should be at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Speech.
I suggest the following:
1. At Start, click on Search, specify "sapisvr.exe" at the part of the filename panel then click on SEARCH.
2. If you find that file in the directory (as I said, if you're using XP; otherwise, it may be different in other MS Windows platforms), then it is a legit program. Further, you can verify that by looking at its size which is supposed to be 36KB.
3. If it is located anywhere else, then it's probably a virus mimicking a legitimate program (again, this is all within the XP platform).
4. If the search shows nothing, repeat the Search process except that this time, go first to the "Advanced ..." and "More advanced ... then mark the tick-box for "Search hidden files and folders" before clicking on search execution (oops... there goes a third message!)
5. If the file is shown in the folder I've specified, then IT IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE HIDDEN! Otherwise, you have a mimic.
If the search result says sapisvr.exe is located in a different folder or is only shown when you ticked on the hidden files and folder option, then you may just have a virus. Otherwise, I repeat the "look at the hardware side" option in my previous post.
If it is a virus, press Ctrl-Alt-Delete, look at the active processes of the Task Manager and see if sapisvr.exe is active. If yes, then we all suggest you run HijackThis and post your log so that the experts out here (not me) can make concrete recomendations on how to remove it.
Cheers!
BTW, is there a beep/tone when the computer types by itself? It may just happen that a key is indeed stuck and the sound indicates a buffer overflow, meaning you really need to replace your keyboard. Or when the "Sticky Keys" dialog box pops up, that's another indicator.
(Oops, there goes the fourth notification of a new post... this will then come as fifth at this span of less than 15 minutes! (Extremely responsive, this AO forum, don't you believe it?)
- Goitz
so then sapisvr.exe is not the problem. I'll try a different keyboard. Although as far as I am concerned nothing got spilled on it.
Thankyou for every person who has helped in this matter!
Hi,
Please check my earlier post, I have just found this which may confirm my suspicions, if it isn't the keyboard:
"Sapisvr.exe is Microsoft's Speech Recognition engine. When enabled, it listens to what's coming in on the microphone, and attempts to interpret what it hears as words, and then enters keystrokes to "type in" those words it heard.
That's nice, in principle, but if always enabled it can cause exactly the odd behavior you describe. You make a noise (just about any noise can cause it to think it's heard a word), and keystrokes get entered. Or ambient noise is enough to cause it to try to recognize speech.
Normally this feature should be disabled, but apparently some PC manufacturers or others enable it by default.
To disable:
* Go to Control Panel
* Click on Regional and Language Options
* Click on the Languages tab
* Click on the Details button
* Click on Speech Recognition
* Click the Remove button"
EDIT:
Some fancy screens have a built in mike and speakers as well :)Quote:
And if you're wondering why this could be happening if you don't have a microphone, look again. Many laptops in particular have built-in microphones, and I'm lead to believe that some other computers may as well.
Here is something that it just typed a few moments ago in Microsoft word while I was offline.......
I mean a new home from the time to two, and the a file and then I am I I Dan Dan La well in all of the the whole of
Did I mention I don't have a speaker phone or anything like that connected to the computer.
Thankyou I went ahead and did that!Quote:

Ya'll may be right it looks like this pc has a built in microphone at the top.
Do u know for sure if a hp pavilon mx70 monitor has one or not! Cause i'm only guessin at the momment?
Yes, above the little HP icon on the monitor is a Mic built in.
Thankyou!Quote:
I have that same one sitting here on my desk. Even though right now my Play list of Sepultura and Samhain has made it shake.

Wait, it just went to another song:
Samhain - All Murder All Guts All Fun, heh.
If u say so. since i disabled that sapisvir.exe my pc hasn't typed by its self so i'm really happy. No virus. No gettin killed by parents & having to by an $800 pc. :D
Anyways, thankyou to every1 that did try to help because it totally paid off. and those are my dearly respects!
Norton AntiVirus is the MS Internet Explorer of virus scanners. I don't think it can be trusted at all anymore. There are many, many vulnerabilities that have been exploited by several viruses.Quote:

I switched from AVG to Avast and I see no reason to use anything else. It's a miracle worker.
Do yourself a favour and get one of these (or any other reputable) free virus scanners and test your system. A second opinion will very valuable.
So is Spam blocking software. If I had that I wouldn't have been able to read your message.
Thanks for the feedback :)
I get very annoyed by posts that do not let me know what actually worked :)
