On my schools WI-FI network I want to make one laptop look like another, as I want to use my Thinkpad instead of the issued Dells. I know I need to clone the MAC address of the issued one so the Thinkpad looks like the other. How do I go about doing that and what else would I need to do to make sure that its not easily seen on the network? (I'm not adding it to the domain, I just want internet access) Thanks

Completely Blew me off, all they did was forward the acceptable use policy to me... as for punishment, they ask you not to do it and to ship your computer home. I just got this new system and am sick of the P3 Dells...

I'm not worried about the risk as its not an offense that is punishable by anything more than a detention in the rule book. I dont want to use the computer for anything illegal I just want to be able to check my email and send instant messages... And its just annoying to transfer files between 2 computers and I'd rather use the one thats not full of monitoring software, I'd like to keep my personal life personal.
What we used to do when I was a tech at a school was to 'take over' the users laptop.
To put an alien machine onto a network is a risk most people won't take but it's not unreasonable for the students to want internet access through the school (we had boarders).
We would reformat and reinstall the student's machine so that it would follow the policies of the network. The pupil would lose admin rights on their machine but would get internet access.
They had to sign away all rights of complaint against the school if we screwed up and they had to reformat their machines themselves when they left.
If you are willing to let your machine be reformatted to the school standard and lose your rights to install what you like the school may let you use your machine. If you are really lucky they might let you dual boot it so you can still run games.
A P3 Dell will still give you internet access if it is allowed though the network so I guess you are tyring to do something the admins don't want you to.
It's probably not worth it, if you are really unlucky your school IT guys will be like Gore and just looking for the chance to screw you for a laugh.
There are several resources on the web for cloning mac addresses.
I'm with SirDice though. Illegal activity or not, violating policy is something I wouldn't recommend. I'm guessing your a student at school. In the work environment, this is a firing offense.

I’m on a multi-homed computer right now. On one of the NICs I can set the MAC (TAP-Win32 Adapter). On the other the option does not appear (Intel PRO/100 VE) so it defiantly depends on the adapter you have.
Under network and dial up connections right click on it (the connection you want to change) and select ‘properties’.
Under the ‘general’ tab, below the NIC description, click ‘configure’ then select advanced. If the MAC address is configurable you will see “MAC Address” in the left column. On the right side is a text box in which you can put the address you want to use.
If you don’t see this option get a NIC that’s configurable or swap cards.
The monitoring software is for your own good though you probably don't believe it. If instant messaging is barred it's to safeguard students from internet grooming.
The school would be at risk of prosecution if they didn't take safeguards to protect you.
You might not be stupid but other students are and the school has to protect them.
If you need to transfer files why not buy a USB drive (if you are permitted to use them).?

Here's your answer. Yes there is software that can 'spoof' a mac address. No one is talking down to you here it's just that there are many threads here stating that how to hack [insert anything] or do something illegal is not the focus of this forum. If you're worried about other people reading your conversations, download gaim and learn how to use the encryption.Quote:

I understand your frustration, but I bet $20 that since the admins are quoting your IM's they're also watching you.
I could read your aim message no matter what laptop your using. Changing the mac has nothing to do with sniffing the network. If I own the network, I have the authority to sniff it.

#1. The people here who have warned you about the AUP are not doing so to hear themselves talk, nor are they doing so to 'talk down to you.' They are warning you because you could be setting yourself up for some type of punishment, possibly severe (it is a firing offense here). I am quite sure, as it is fairly standard, that part of that AUP revolves around a consent to monitoring (required since monitoring is a form of wiretap) and by using the network services, you agree to monitoring. Monitoring is necessary to limit/prevent damage from things such as hackers, worms, and virii and is also necessary to shield the school from other things such as legal issues if say one of the students were to be caught running P2P software and sharing copyright protected media.
#2. Many of the people here are also the same type of security professionals that are responsible for managing/admining networks like your school network. You should remember that when you go around asking for ways to circumvent controls that you have already agreed to abide by.
If you are concerned about your private messages being read, I would suggest using an encrypted protocol, assuming it is not against your AUP. Something like gaim with the gaim-encryption plugin would work for this.
If you want privacy go find the person you want to talk to and hide in a cave. Don't expect a lot of privacy online especially at school.
No one is talking down to you, they are giving you advice to stay out of trouble. Lots of people in here look on their networks for people who are screwing around and then get them fired.
It's easier in Linux.

Sorry if the last post was harsh, but like everyone else is saying we are trying to keep you out of trouble. Adhere to the AUP. One more thing, make sure encryption does go against the policy. Like my network, only authorized encryption is allowed. Encryption makes it hard for admins to monitor the network if we don't know that it's being used.
To address the admins you refer to, they are acting in an unprofessional manner if they are discussing what is monitored on the net. They do have a boss!
Sorry for my little bitch fest earlier. I'm just frustrated bc I've tried to get information from security people before and the security by secricy is starting to get old. I know this doesnt really apply to this post, but I'm always called "the little hacker" by the security guy here at work (summer job as an IT intern). When in reality I've never broken into a system in my life, nor do I have the desire too. I have 2 more years at boarding school and then am off to college where I plan to major in CS and no one is willing to teach me anything about security bc they just think I'm going to turn into another "script kiddie" that gets them emailed when they port scan their router...

IF you really want to learn security, hang out in the sans reading room. People will not talk security with you simply because we're so used to phising and other types of social engineering, that we don't trust anyone in that we don't know or isn't in the security/admin field.
And there is no way in hell the school admin is going to help "the little hacker" EVER!
u can use google to get mac spoofers, i was in your situation in a college situation and i demonstrated why people shouldnt enter personal information on a public puter, i used a piee of freeware to grab names and pw's for aim and hotmail..then i removed the program, someone said that i was stealing credit card numbers, they grabbed my workstation..nothing happened
later on i informed the admins that their patches were 6 mos. out of date, they told me to pay attention to my professors and leave the network to "the big boys" next day all patches were updated
my point in all this is all they want is their paycheck and to fly uner the radar, if they had any real skills they wouldnt be working in a school setting , the wages are substandard but on the plus side, they dont actually do much, you have become a threat and are threatening to upset the applecart
some of the people here have been in the field so long they have forgotten how they learned, you learn by doing the things they say cant be done, not by asking questions to people whose best answer is usually "no"
so do what you are going to do knowing you may face negative consequences, weigh the gain involved against the detrimental effects to the rest of your life in the field, if you are like me you are going to do it anyways, you gotta
whatever you do, do it well, dont compromise the security of others and know they will be watching you do it

The replies you have received are typical of those you would receive on almost any security or support website.
Basically systems administrators and support guys like:
1. Standard software
2. Standard hardware
3. locked down systems.
That is because they are easier to protect, easier to maintain and easier to support. And for "easier" you can also read "much cheaper" and they will certainly have a budget.
I once had to do a software upgrade on a remote site with about 200 machines. Virtually every one was different...............it was a nightmare that took me two days :eek: By the same measure we updated 1200 machines on my site down the network in an hour!
"Non-issue" machines are also to be avoided. You never know what they might have on them. I once had great fun (NOT) sorting out an Office 97 application that someone had come onto site with an Office 2000 installed laptop, opened it and said "yes" to the conversion option.
You must also appreciate that if you use your personal machine, everyone else will want to do the same and pretty soon it will be total anarchy.
The only solution I can think of is if you get your own private ISP connection.
