Hi XTC46,

Don't really know much about it, but a quick look on google shows that Dell denied it...and said they were customized by the dealers...

I'm not sure if it was Dell, but I know a similiar company already started this. Bleh, oh well.. It's cool that machines are coming out pre-installed with a Linux OS (in this case, Linspire! :D).

Wal-mart has been selling lappies with Linspire for quite some time now (under $500 iirc)...

Have they now? Wow.. thanks for the heads up, Negative. I have a Wal-Mart (a HUGE one) right off the main road right near where I live. I'm going to have to go check out the laptops and see what they have (especially for that price :D).

Well..the more the merrier as they say...maybe the more Linux becomes pre-installed on more systems the better the quality of product Microsoft will have to deliver in order to keep market share?

If you'd buy one of those laptops, you'd never want to touch a computer again (which in Spyder's case wouldn't be such a bad thing, of course ;) )... I've never ever seen a computer with such bad ratings in any test you consult.

I bought a copy of Linspire a while back just to see if it had any potential for knocking MS products off their perch as an "off the shelf" alternative.

I must say that I was rather impressed, and am not surprised at this development.

The purpose of this distro is to de-geekify Linux, and make it comparable to Windows and MacOS. It is something your granny or anyone totally new to computers could use with equal ease to Windows or Mac.

It is basically a preconfigured, extensively GUIfied Linux that is "load and go". As such it is a viable competitor to Windows and Mac.

True Linux afficionados will throw up their hands in horror, or say "but I can do that with my XYZ distro". If they do, they have totally missed the point. The object of the exercise is to "bring Linux to the masses" in a form that is directly competitive with Windows and Mac. As in "command lines are not allowed" ;) and it must work straight out of the box on default settings.

It will be interesting to see how this situation develops.........................

Just my thoughts based on an experiment many months ago
