I'm not too worried myself; I own a 2003 Honda accord and a few street bikes. I'm not too worried about paying the Euro prices for fuel either.

Yanno, I found it quite amazing hearing the EEC had offered us Petrol (BIG THANKS GUYS!) to help tide us through the ensuing shortage. It's more amazing still that they're paying twice per gallon what we are even now, and still offering it.
Do your part: No unneccessary trips, park the frigging SUV and drive economy (we don't care how macho or affluent you are), quit cutting the yard (it's almost fall anyway), drive sloooower!
ya down here in Texas where we usually have some of the cheapest prices its friggin 2.99 a gallon! i am seriously containing my driving habits, wishing i didnt have to drive at all
Lots of tankers have been booked to shift petrol from EU (EEC was renamed about 10-15 yr ago). Apparently the cost of shipping space has doubled so the fuel will probably still be expensive when it gets to you.
I've got to fill up today, fingers crossed it's not the 99.9p a litre I saw on the TV last night (3.8 litre to the US gallon). The only way I could make my car any more economical is to push it I get 62 mpg (50mpg US gallon).
I think the only car I have ever driven that had that sort of economy, was a Siat (sp?) Ibiza and most of the time I felt like I was pushing it :DQuote:

It's actualy quite amazing how much fuel you can conserve by driving well. I did a driving instructors course years ago, at the begining one of the other pupils was using two full tanks of gas at the weekend, to visit his home, over a 600 mile round trip, by the end of the course he had very nearly halved that. Not only was he saving money on fuel but his journey time had decreased as wel.l
I've got a Clio 1.5dCi (100bhp) . I drive a single carriageway road to work so it's a bit slower than motorway speeds so that helps. It's a very economical car (650miles to the tank), I don't like it much but it's economical. Nice Audi with a V6 diesel next time I think.
And Im stuck driving my 1989 mercury cougar that gets about 20mpg. I go to work and thats it. And I refuse to work short shifts because then its not worth the gas it takes me to get to work. I would car pool but nobody at work lives in the area of town I do so it would kind of defeat the purpose. 3.19 in central illinois. I can remeber when 5 bucks would get me at least half a tank. Now it doesnt even get me 2 gallons
yeah, i work about 30 minutes from home (1 hour with traffic). I'm not really worried about fuel prices cuz I drive a Kia so its only costing me $28 bucks to fill 'er up!
$3.09 here in San Diego at the 76 station near my work. We usually get shafted, but I guess not yet as Zombiemann seems to have it worse than me. I am thinking about getting a cheap car for a couple of grand to drive back and forth. My truck gets about 14mpg (F150) and its getting pricey. As work is looking at moving to another location further away from where I live, I might just have to do that...
w00t! I only payed $2.86 today!! As I was pumping the gas, the guy was on a ladder changing the price to $3.19. However, I beat him done, so I only had to pay $2.86! :D
Honestly, it doesn't affect my family that much. We've only got 1 car, it gets pretty good gas mileage, and we use about a tank a week, maybe a little less. Still, it cost me almost $35.
Anyone else having to pre-pay everywhere you go to fill up? Makes me nuts...what am I, psychic, that I'm going to know to the penny how much gas it's going to take?! But with the price, I guess drive-offs are a real concern.

There are a lot of variables that come into play, but the main ones that come into mind are tire pressure and speed...........I believe you burn up 25% more fuel after 50MPH. I believe that's for the average car. Windows open cause drag, slamming the pedal for acceleration, use of air conditioning, bad oil....
Hi Imitation,
Well..here in Canada...it's around $1.38 a litre...it's jumped almost $0.50 since last week.
That translates into over $6.00 a US gallon.
And we're not even dependant on US oil.
Eg ;)
I cant even remember a place that didnt make you pre pay for gas. Not saying your old or anything Deb, but I live in California where noone trusts each other I guess.Quote:

LOL! I am not old! But I'm only talking about like in the last month that we've started having to pre-pay. It's never been an issue here, except at a couple of stations, and no one went to those stations. :p Now, it's all of the stations. I've never had to pre-pay at the one I went to today, it sucked.
Wow... do you live in a small town? I could not even think of how many people would of abused not prepaying here... Kind of sad I guess. All the prepay does for me is make me use my debit card. So much easier.Quote:

Yep, I live in a small town...and paying w/ my debit card means I can't go in and talk to the lady that owns the place, and she rocks!
It's not any secret. Imitation gave some good points, car condition and reduction of drag are factors. Mainly though it is a light foot on the gas and brake. Advance observation is a key factor, how many people do you know that drive upto a junction and stop then look then go. When observation on the aproach and an adjustmeant of speed would mean stopping was un-necessary.The same for traffic lights and roundabouts.Quote:

On motorways/freeways smooth changes of speed and direction useing observation again to keep as constant speed as possible, avoid breaking. Why break to avoid a hazard when if you had observed well in advance and adjusted your possition and speed breaking would have been un-necessary. Every time you break you then have to accelerate back to your cruising speed. This uses fuel. What I mean is if you are driving and there is a slower vehicle in front or some other hazard, dont wait untill you up it's arse before you start to look to overtake or avoid, observe the hazard and start planning your route through/past the hazard well in advance. This avoids having to make constant and rapid changes in speed and position.
Smoothness and a constant speed == good fuel consumption and coupled with good observation == faster overall journey times.
Next time your in a car, look ahead to where the road disapears from sight. Then think about where the road goes and what conditions are like on the unseen stretch of road. Can you see something to indicate which direction the road goes, is there a row of telegraph poles, bushes things like this can give you advanced warning of road direction changes. Is there a church steeple in the distant to indecate your aproaching a built up area. Don't just look as far as the road goes look further ahead.
Not sure about Deb exactly, but I live right outside of Atlanta...we hardly ever have to prepay unless it's after dark. Maybe it's just different in the south. Maybe we have more drive offs too, lol.Quote:

Sweet! Thank you Jinxy and !mitationRust for all your advice. I practice most of the things you mentioned, except I tend to have a lead foot on the gas... I do ~80 when I'm going in or out of Atlanta. I'm good about not abusing the brakes though and preparing for things coming up before I get there.Quote:

Lol, my mom is the worst ever. She'll slam on the brakes for no good reason sometimes and piss off everyone on the highway. She also likes to wait for stop signs for turn green...
Lol, my sister is bloody terrible. She is so erratic I feel sea sick after even a short trip with her.Quote:

I'm a college student paying my own way, and am by far too financially poor to consider buying a car, let alone worry over gasoline. Although I do divy up some cash for my friend who do drive (when we take road trips, etc), I stick to buses for the most part. I've got a very good grasp of mass-transit, and definately employee my special student perks with the bus systems. $54 USD for infinite bus/shuttle uses for an entire year! Huzzah!
