Help required identifying Intel processor

Hi guys,
A friend of mine just gave me an Intel D850MV motherboard and P4 processor.
Only thing is, he can't remember what the clock speed of the processor is.
I was wondering, is there a way to identify the processor by the long alphanumerical text strings printed on the top of the processor?
On the assumption that there is, here are the strings:

1) L237A243-0124

2) 88532PE003512


Oh yeah, I did a Google on "identify intel processor" and I came up with links to:

1) Intel's Processor Identification utility which is a piece of software that needs to be installed once you've got your processor installed. No help to me, because I want to know BEFORE I rebuild my box.
2) a lot of old pages that refer to older processors. No good to me.
3) a couple of pages that spoke about P4 processors, but nothing I could find seem relevent to the numbers I quoted above.

Keen to hear if anyone has other ideas.

Have you tried to see what the max capability of the board is ???

I followed your link (thanks for that one!), but really, that just lets me know that the processor is going to be somewhere between a 1.4Ghz and a 2.6GHz.
I was hoping to find out exactly what chip it was! :)

that took me less than 10 seconds to find, just how much do you want us to do :)

as you might have guessed, it also tapped out my meagre capabilities too :D

It was just that (as suggested by my first post) I thought there was a way to identify a processor by the codes printed on top of such.

Why don't you just build a temporary box and use some software like everest to figure it out... you would have had the answer by now...

I guess you are going to have to build it. I ran those numbers through the intel product search and an independent database, and got nothing :(

Looking at them they don't "seem right" either, from a product identification viewpoint?

You can determine an AMD processor from the numbers but I do not think that this is the case with Intel, except those with an sS number?

Do you know what make of machine the kit came out of?..................they may not even be Intel numbers.

Mmm, thanks for that one and all.
I was hoping to find an asnwer before building a box, as the MB in question doesn't include on board graphics, which means my only other option is to disassemble my current box and rebuild it with this MB and CPU.
Of course, as you can imagine, I'm not too keen on disrupting my current system if I then find out that the "new" MB and CPU represents a slower combination than my existing system!
I'm currently running an AMD Athlon XP2800+ on an Asus A7V8X-X MB with 1 GB of RAM.
The Intel board only has 512MB of... is it RIMM? RAMBUS? Plucked if I know. :) Whatever it's called, there's only half a gig of it versus the whole gig I've currently got.
Oh well, looks like I'll just have to do as you all suggest... build it anyway, and if I don't like, rebuild it again!

No need to completely build a machine and installing windows just to find out what processor it is.
Just stick in any kind of VGA card (AGP/PCI doesn't matter). Hookup a powersupply and switch it on. Most BIOSes will show exactly what processor/speed it is..

SirDice has a point there HOWEVER.....................as you can read the numbers on top of the processor, you will need thermal paste, a heatsink and fan :D

I would not mess with your existing system as I very much doubt if the Intel box will be as fast, assuming you have some decent DDR RAM?

The 512Mb is PC800 RAMBUS RIMMS which is very fast, but bloody expensive! That in itself is interesting as Intel and RAMBUS were only partners for a short while. This suggests to me that it is a fairly early Pentium, from the days when Intel were having serious difficulty matching AMD for performance. It was really only the superiority of the PC800 RAMBUS memory over PC2100DDR that kept them in contention.

I would get a moderately priced case and a cheap AGP card (4x will do) and take it from there. Remember that the board and processor are already 3 years old, so it is only worth spending so much.

Incidentally, I would only tolerate on board graphics in a very low end system. The fact that this board does not have them indicates that it was higher end when it was new ;)

Correct. It was not a boxed chip. It was given to my friend by Intel for review purposes, but he's finished with it, and they didn't want it back, so he gave it to me.
I've looked, and can't find the 5 digit code you refer to. I followed that link that ImitationRust put up, and I can see those codes, but there doesn't appear to be anything like that on this chip.
I'll type in everything I can read off the top of the chip.

Might be a coincidence, but this box has a P4 2.26 and I had no problem in overclocking it to 3.066MHz.

It may just be an urban legend, but I have heard that chips that don't quite pass their spec are sold as lower performance.

Sounds like a prototype 2.26~3.06?

Given that the MoBo is 2.6MHz I guess that is what it will be set at?

not myth, is true, when the chip fails to meet the spec for 3Gig, BUT it DID work, they re-label it acordingly. It's allowed to sell on 3 Gig chips as lower spec, and it makes some money too.

I was reading it in a mag [so it MUST be true] I would look for the link, but I'm getting ready for me jolly holidays right NOW, and will be leaving for the airport in just a couple of hours .......

No worries mate :D my comment was on the difficulty of deciding which one it was because of the two S/Ns.......................

I am not sure how it will have been set up, but I guess that like mine you could overclock it a fair bit? (not that I recommend that for normal use).

My initial recommendation is build a new box around the MoBo and processor and see how it performs................hey you would get a good price for either system if you don't want a backup? ;)

Keep your eyes out for some secondhand or cheap RAMBUS PC800 memory....................I picked up 2x256Mb for about A$130

Get a good heatsink and fan (3Gb rated) and use silver thermal paste.

Definitely sounsd like it's going to be worth rebuilding my current box to use this MB and chip then. It should definitely be a faster combination than my existing AthlonXP 2800+.
Although, as you say, I'll probably want to pick up another 512MB of RAM ASAP.
I read that all the RAM slots must be filled either with real RAM chips or with "fillers" that provide some sort of "connection throughput"? Does that sound right to you? I notice that there are 4 modules in the 4 slots, and 2 appear to be RAM modules and 2 are much shallower, and are probably those "filler" modules.
BTW, do you ever sleep? :)

Ah, an "Intel Confidential" chip. Anything with the SSpec that starts with a "Q" is going to be tough to figure out unless you turn the machine on. To bring the information you presented together:

After some searching I found a page that listed a processor with the S-Spec QRBOES. It apparently belongs to a 3.06GHz Northwood Pentium 4, C1 stepping w/ 512KB of L2 cache. It doesn't follow what I'd expect on the Part/OEM number which identifies it as E0 stepping. If the rest of that OEM Number is right (the 885 in the beginning doesn't match anything though) I think this is a 1.5v part. It could be the 3rd speed tier of this paticular sample, as the 03 following the E0 usually designates that (and is beyond the 70's for "real" processors).

It looks like you have a good chip on your hands though, if I got it ID'd right. The C1 stepping goes decently far. Apparently someone got his to 3787MHz with the standard cooler (likely not stable), while another person got it to 4293MHz on LN2.


Definately put it together and see what it is with something like CPU-Z. Post back and tell us what it is.

Yes, when I got my box way back, it had 2x128Mb strips and two shorter, thinner "dummies" in the other two slots. I put the 2 x 256 in the first two slots and the 2 x 128 in the second two (force of habit :D )................it used to matter when you had 4Mb, 8Mb and 16Mb 72-pin EDO RAM.

Nihil, thanks for the info on RAM. I'll definitely have a hunt around on EBay for some second hand RAMBUS RAM.
As for the rebuild, this week's a messed up week for me as here in Oz, we've just had a long weekend, and next weekend, my wife, son and I are going away for 3 days.... so I'm probably looking at Wednesday week (about the 12th October) before I can do the rebuild. :(
Still, might be able to track down some extra RAM before then which would save me having to open the box twice! See? There's good in everything if you only look for it! :)

I don't know anything about that s-spec. Really need CPU-Z's help here. Actually now that I think about it, the Part/OEM number won't tell you anything about the stepping. Also, there was no Northwood E0 steppings. The Northwood C1 stepping tends to average about 3.2 to 3.4 gig. I'm a Northy fanboy.

Well I rarely find anyone in the public to actually shoot the **** with about computers. Radio shack "peoples" aren't quite the type I hang with. I hang with a more mechanical breed, more like stunt riders doing endos.....we get more pu$$y and save gas that way. ;)

Mmm...stunt riders doing endos. I used to have a dirtbike...Suzuki RM250. I endurance raced the thing. There's something fun about ripping through a loose sandy beach at the top of the powerband and managing to reach gear 4 in under 50 meters before the motor gags at the dirt it has been throwing behind the bike as the beach slowly turns to much harder dirt... My older XR-100R choked through this course in gear 3 while a pedestrian could have out-paced it...

So yeah, I love the mechanical breed. But I feel alienated (and thus seperated from the mechanics) because my bike is still in Japan and my car plain sucks. But my photography is pretty good. ;)


I also don't hang with the computer kids or D&D people. Kind of on my own really, but hoping to wow the ladies with my extreme knowledge in some rather useless stuff such as calculus, mechanical engineering, and photography. Computers are something that few people I know realize I understand intimately ;)

OK, so here's the latest.
I didn't get around to rebuilding my machine on Wednesday as I had hoped, simply because I had ordered another 512MB of PC800 Rambus RAM via Ebay, and I was waiting for it to arrive, so I wouldn't have to ull the box apart again!
So, the RAM arrived last night, and this afternoon, I pulled my machine apart, put the Intel board in and powered up.
Thankfully, I had had the presence of mind to print off the instruction manual for the MB (or at least the parts I thought I might need) in advance.
When I powered up, I got 3 short beeps, which according to the manual means a "first 64KB memory error".
So, I then had to pull it all aprt, and rebuild it all with my old MB again.
Happy happy joy joy.
So, anybody got any ideas what a "first 64KB error" represents? Is it cheap to fix or expensive?
I swear, some days I wonder why I like computers at all.

Hrm...64KB almost sounds like the 64KB+64KB (Instruction + Data) L1 cache size...but I kind of doubt this would develop a problem...it is perhaps the most precise and expensive part of the chip...

So I guess in short, you are hearing beep codes so the RAM is communicating correctly. I don't know if the 64KB is a RAM or a CPU issue though...any other compatible processors sitting around that you could test?

Hmmmm,

I don't think it is the cache, as I recall that produces a whole load of beeps?

1. Try it with the two original memory strips in Bank 0 and the continuity strips in Bank1
2. Then try with the two new strips in Bank 0

Be sure that they are properly seated, and the contacts are clean.

Tim~ my guess is that the beeps are being driven by some sort of EEPROM BIOS chip, so you would hear them even if the RAM was faulty?

Definitely not a population problem. I had all 4 slots filled at all times.
No other processors available for testing, unfortunately.
I also tried pulling out the new RAM modules and putting the CRIMMS back in, just to test that angle, too.

Will probably not get another chance to disassemble my box 'til at least Wednesday. Will try your recommendations then.
And yeah, RAM modules were definitely seated properly, as the little white clips won't click into place if the modules aren't correctly seated.
No, can't get into the BIOS, as machine isn't getting through the POST.

Not sure if it's of interest, but the MB has its own built on speaker! Which was just as well, because I couldn't find the correct pins (on the board) for ANY of the wires from my case. The manual for the board identifies the particular pin array as the "front panel connector", but doesn't specify which pins are for power switch, power LED, HDD activity, reset, or speaker. Thankfully, the box powered on by itself by toggling the PSU power switch.

In post 64Kb of memory has to be there ready for read/write, it has to be able to store some post code. I have some input but I have to run now. I'll be back later in the day.

Yes, you're correct. My current system is an Athlon processor, but the PSU is a 400 watt with both the regular rectangular power connector, AND the newer square 4 pole connector.
Don't recall the brand of the PSU (and if you could see my setup, you'd understand why I'm not in a hurry to reopen the box to find out!)

The mobo beeps are from no RAM I believe.............almost positive. Did you buy the correct RAM? We need some system specs on both boards and CPUs.

No, my original system is an Asus A7V8X-X MB with Athlon XP2800+ and 1GB DDRRAM.
I was given the Intel D850MV MB with processor of unknown speed and 512MB RAMBUS RAM. I purchased the extra 512 of RAM 'cause I didn't want to step backwards in the RAM dept.
But when the Intel board gave me 3 beeps and wouldn't boot (couldn't make it through the POST), I had to rebuild my original config, as I had 3 hours of work to do last night, and had to have something that was functional.
