Okay, I've wanted to ask this for years. Why? Why would I pretend to be a girl if I were a boy? What is the goal? What is the purpose? Are we assuming that they are gay men trying to get the attention of lonely internet men? Are we assuming that they're just ****ing around and trying to make someone look like a fool? I've never understood this, it totally baffles me. Also, when I chat to a man, the first question out of my mouth is never "Do you have pics?" Why are men so damn paranoid that they're talking to a man pretending to be a girl?

As for the whole 'why do men pose as women' - well I think all your answers might be right...and then again none of them maybe. I have known several people (even on this site) who have posed as the opposite sex, not for any actual sexual or homo-erotic reason. Sometimes to prove a point. Sometime to piss people off or make them look like idiots.
I guess what am saying is not every guy will / has done it - but am pretty sure that whatever reason you can come up with for why they would....someone will or already has ;)

I would like to say in retrospect that I think it's really cool that women do participate in AO comminity and in general are becoming more interested in technology. But I also have to point out that I don't know any women like that in real life. Most of the "young women" (I'm 25) don't really care about much about anything but reading Womens magazines, diets/makup/dress etc., and celebrity gossip. That is just my observation. I'm not neggin' you but in general I think that women should change their reputation for flakiness from within. AO and WoW is a nice part of that change.

Anyway, deb... I don't have an answer as to /why/ some guys feel the need to masquerade as a female online but in the gaming world it is all to common. Which is why you will find that most guys that strike up a conversation via IM or email generally want a picture to go with the name they are chatting with. That doesn't guarantee that it is a woman they are chatting with but it tends to put them at ease.
Me? I'm too old to care, and too committed to my girlfriend to wonder if the person I'm having an innocent conversation with is actually of the opposite sex. To tell the truth it doesn't matter what sex you are as I am most likely chatting with you because you are interesting as a person and not a sex object.

Lv4, I guess that's why it offends me so much when I'm asked. I don't care what you look like, and you're not going to have sex with me anyway, so why does it matter? I mean, when I've been talking to someone for awhile, I don't mind letting them see a picture of me, and most of the people that I know on AO know what I look like, that's fine...but the best way to stop talking to me is to demand a picture right off the bat. It doesn't matter what I look like, you're never even going to meet me, let alone do anything with me that the way I look will effect.
For the record, I did have a pic on AO. For a very short amount of time...men are pigs :p

My male boss at work created female twilek on Star Wars Galaxies. Made her a dancer and just had her dance and flirt all day long and he made more money with that character than he did his main (and in less time.)
