This question is just out of curiousity. Memory, best known as copyright now...told me that he has his comp setup with DDR and SDRAM together, but who, in the right mind, ever believed him? :p So I'm just curious is this possible...is this even reccommended? If not, can I even put a DDR ram stick into a SDRAM slot? (I've never seen a DDR stick, so i don't know if it's any different..)

The DDR RAM sticks have only 1 groove.

Doesn't take a surgeon to notice he's pullin the wool ova yah.
Just look at the 2 pages, and you'll notice that the sticks are different...

There are motherboards that support SDRAM and DDRAM. They are separate banks, and the machine will only boot with ONE memory type. Similarly, there are older boards that support EDO RAM and SDRAM.
The memory will only fit in its own slot type so you cannot make a mistake.

*continues looking for teh perfect video card in his price range, this chipset is outdated* and no Mem, a PCIe video card wont fit into a PCI slot.....I've already researched that! >:O
EDIT : Another memory question; as I took out a RAM stick of my friend to check weather it was SDRAM or DDR, I accidently put it in wrong and it said "ERROR Lower memory" or something similar, would windows NOT boot if it has lower memory than last time it was booted? (not like i want to DEGRADE in terms of memory, 192mb is bad enough as is, just curious)
btw, if nobody has noticed yet, I've been making a lot of hardware related posts :p trying to boost up my crappy 5yr old PC performance to better suit the needs of leading technology. (This thing came with 64mb of RAM, the minimum for Win98, Win98, Intel Chipset, P3 56*mHz [* = i forgot that digit] 10gb of HD space, now 192 mb of RAM, WinXP, 1 CD-RW drive..later to be upgraded to a DVD-RW, 50gb of hard drive space [much needed except I only have had it for about a month and already have only 10gb of space left :S)
EDIT2 After looking around newegg for like 10 minutes lol, I've managed to find one that I like. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814103167 which leads me to my next question, does the memory type of the video card have anything to do with the compatabilty of the video card to your motherboard? example, I have SDRAM, the video card is DDR, will that be an issue?

It is a 566Mhz PIII.................a nice chip!
I do some refurbs for this local charity, and have managed to get a PI/133 to run within 12% of a PII/266.............it CAN be done :D
Don't worry about the RAM type on your video card, it will work just fine...............the limitation is in the connection.............PCI is 33Mhz, ASA (who has those?) is 12.5Mhz and the more modern connections go from 66-133Mhz.

I finally got a new copy of win3.1 i installed it on a old 286 computer, and oh how great it felt to re-live the good ol' days.. ;)

You are running way too little RAM. I would want 512Mb in that outfit, or I would run 98SE and stop there?
What memory slots have you got?...............you need 512Mb for Win XP ;)

I have a 256 stick and a 128 stick, Xp Pro runs smooth as it can.....even when i had two 128 sticks it didnt or crash.
Raion - DONT buy Radeon....Nvidia ROCKS ! :) just a suggestions since i've used nvidia cards for 4 years. i did hear Radeon isn't bad either.
Actually, I read that ATI Radeon v4 (forgot the versions so random number there) was considerably better than Gforce v4. If im not mistaken Nvidia uses gforce chipsets..

as a MINIMUM - double it to 256, THEN do the M$ thing, and DOUBLE it

my computer only lags when I have a lot of things open, runs pretty smooth if u ask me...or maybe I'm just used to this speed? :P

how much memory does task manager show you to be using when you are in 'full flow' ??
if it shows you to be using 185 [for example] then you are having to page file the excess 50+ MB, which WILL slow you RIGHT down ......
the correct amount of RAM is NOT an upgrade, rather it should be considered an essential :p
Well, I appreciate all the comments and suggestions, and i might, just might get a new RAM stick along with my video card. However my question still hasnt been answered. Does the type of RAM the video card need to be the same type of RAM that my computer uses?

you don't get GPU RAM and CPU RAM :confused:
Try and buy a single stick of 512MB RAM that is comp[atible with the RAM you have now
OR
get two MATCHED sticks of 256MB
it really doesn't make that much difference to performance,the single or double path, BUT, it does make a difference ...[ you shouldn't mix 'n' match the RAM sticks, use them as matched pairs or a single]
use your existing RAM as the start of your spare part box :p

No, your video card is independent of your main memory (RAM).
Actually, the RAM will give you a better performance boost than a fancy video card unless you have integrated video.
My XP box gets up to around 360Mb without doing anything special. Sure it will work with less, but performance isn't that good.

video cards are a seperate entity, they are fitted to allow you to make use of the graphical ability available today, they slot into either the PCI or AGP slot in the Mo/Bo.
they are NOT DDR nor SDR they are Graphics Processing Units [GPU]
RAM is the memory in use in the PC, it is found in its own memory slots on the Mo/Bo
types include Synchronous Data Rate [SDR] and Double Data Rate [DDR] which as the name implies allows the data to be 'manipulated' twice as fast.
However, as nihil has pointed out, for maximum gain v minimum outlay, upping the RAM is the way to go, if you have insufficient RAM, the GPU will be able to process data FASTER than the CPU can cope = Sloooooooow dooooooown ....:p
forget the GPU, get a decent amount of RAM. THEN consider the GPU.

If you notice there, they have DDR Video Cards and SDRAM video cards (you have to really look for SDRAMs, not many), hence the reason for my question.
Also you forgot PCIe :)
Yes, the SDR cards are basically obsolete these days. The DDR ones will work just fine.

Anyway, DDR is SDRAM, it's basically next generation to plain sdram, I think some people might be getting confused and putting SDRAM in the SIMM category, when in fact SDRAM is in the DIMM category, and DDR-SDRAM is what DDR is... But like what some have said, You can't mix old plain SDRAM with DDR-SDRAM...
Because of this reason (ddr being a newer SDRAM) That is why you will see in computer advertisements 512mb DDR-SDRAM (for example). Or maybe you all new that and I am overthinking this whole situation lol...
BTW, sorry for bringing up a dead thread but I felt I needed to clarify things :p
