Slow run :(

On one of company computers one (company related)program runs slow (when searching in the databse for events) just on one of computers.
One way is to reinstall, but it takes a long time and all those license and keys....

I traid to clear registry and register that app. related dlls and repair database with build in functions but with no results.
It is WinXP with SP1, computer is clean and defragmebted.
(I am afraid to update to SP2)

I not know if it is some fast way out. It may also not exist.....

Not sure what version of XP your using nihil but those directions get a tad confusing after <start>! :D :(

I'm just not sure which operating system he's using.... hehe

I've got Start --> Control Panel --> Taskbar & Start Menu
Yet there's no Advanced tab.. (XP Pro)

Then.. I've got

Start --> Settings --> Taskbar & Start Menu --> Advanced and then I've got a Clear button but that only clears my Recent Documents/History seems like a pretty moot point that won't accomplish much (especially since the rest are just single commands) (2000 Pro)

oops sorry i forgot to add... that happends after that software was updated.....

I have no rights to install or uninstall that software and must to work around of that problem....

Hey Hey,

If it happened when you installed the program and you don't have the rights to uninstall it... it sounds like you're basically SOL... submit a request to have it uninstalled... Maybe the helpdesk/techies will come by and fix it for you... Does the computer have lower specs than the others that are running the software? Do you have a lot of extra things running in the background? How many processes are running? What are they, how much RAM is used, how much do you have... how much does this program want.. what's your processor speed... It sounds like the computer is just being over worked...

There must have been 20+ security patches since SP2 came out, I would be very surprised if it is only the fact, that you tried to do an install/reinstall and messed with dll's, that the program is slow.

Bite the bullet and get SP2, otherwise spend hours cleaning the crap that is going to if not allready infect that PC, you might want to consider this as maybe one of the reasons it is sloooooow.


And if it is not doing it automatically, you will have to re-enable windows auto update in the services(sounds like it was disabled)http://www.cs.duke.edu/csl/faqs/autoupdate.php

Report this to the techs/help desk. Not for them to fix it per se, but to transfer the liability. You can use the excuse that they haven't fixed it yet. :D

Here is a list of programs that may interfere with the SP2, check this list against what is on your machines, if none of them appear there, then have your techs upgrade.

This SP2 has been out for over a year, and has been well documented, half of the problems or more likely 2/3rds of the users out there, who do not have the nescessary patches end up going to all of the forums to get help, because their PC is infected, almost all of the HJT logs you see in forums start out with winXP SP1.

Also if these techs know what they are doing, I am sure they are well aware of incompatibilties with their programs and SP2. ;)

Some applications need to run with administrator privledges...and you can do that with xp...run as admin

If it was installed without admin privledges it may not have installed correctly...which is what it sounds like

Log in with the admin account..remove the software...reboot..login again with the admin and reinstall the app....

Does it run ok with the admin account...but not with a lesser account??

SP 2 may have some issues with certain applications...but this should be documented..either by MS or by the application vendor..by now

We usually test apps on one machine...before rolling out major sps, new oses, app udates, etc

What kinda application\program is it???

Something else may be interfering...

If it is graphic intense...could be that you dont have the right video card.....

Program is specialized (not standard) for manage own databases in the some kind of store.
It runs with Adminrights.
Computer using dial-up connection, but is amlost never connecting to the internet.
It is just distributer of that software can do something now, becouse program slows after thay updated it.
I did all that you sade and all what I could but limitaton of rights and non standard software is limitation for knowledge about can be done. :(

One other thing to consider....can you go back to "last known good configuration" on start up, or better yet, can you do a system restore to the point before this install was done?

I would agree that it is their problem not yours. You might look at your resource manager and see if it is consuming a lot...............that would suggest a memory leak in the application.

If resource usage is normal, then it sounds like a program conflict or version incompatibility. You might ask about the environment in which they tested this updated version?
