DVD-RW problem..

I finally got my DVD-RW and managed to get my two hard drives and DVD-RW drive all working. When I boot up, everything is perfect, however as I use the computer more, the DVD-RW drive doesn't eject if there is a CD inside. I tried pressing the eject button several times, doesn't work, tried via My Computer, doesn't work. What could possibly be wrong? However I can still play the DVD inside, view it's contents, etc. but I cannot eject it.

My initial guess was that it is a PSU issue, but that can't be it, since I havent ADDED anything new, I just replaced a CD-RW drive with a DVD-RW drive. I can imagine that a DVD-RW would use more power, but it shouldn't be THAT much. Besides, it still works, meaning the PSU still has enough to power the lasers and etc. Also, when I restart, everthing goes back to normal for a while..Any help/Comments?

Have you tried manually ejecting the DVD? there should be a tiny little hole on the front of the DVD bay, use a pin or something and push it into the hole, it should eject the Tray.
I am also thinking that it would also be the DVD that you are using, i'm thinking that it might not be compatible with the DVD drive.
So it would spin up but when you want to eject it, you will recieve all sorts of grief.
Also have you tried ejecting the disk once the computer is shutting down? Or when you very first turn it on, try to eject it when your at the Bios screen or something..

just a few thoughts.

Basically one day i put a dvd in watched it and then the thing wouldn't eject, I took the DVD out manually as F2B suggest, and just figured it had issues with that DVD. Well next time i put a CD in that i always use, ran fine and then again wouldn't eject.

I tried a whole lot of things including checking all connections etc, but the thing just wouldn't eject when there was something in it. In the end as it was out of warranty i had to bin it, it was just fortunate that A) it was only a DVD reader and not writer, and B) a mate had a spare that he was didn't want, gave it to me for free, and its been going strong for the past 2 years.

No, once I restart, I can eject it normally. I thought about the manual ejection but first wanted to see you're comments. I also tried with 2 DVDs (both 'bootleg'), one just didn't play, I had to restart to eject it, the second one, played but wasn't able to eject it.

Try upgrading the firmware for the drive. (Usually found on the manufactures webpage.)

Does this mean it will eject as soon as you put the disk in, but not after you use the computer for a while?

I have had the some problem with my DVD/CD Read/Write drive, but unfortunatly i haven't figured out what causes it. Sicne it doesn't happen often to me i don't have much info on when it happens, but if we have the same problem here are a few things i have noticed.
1) It tends to heppen when i am still using that cd/dvd and try to eject it without stopping it first.
2) It also happens when I have a lot of things running when i try to eject it.
3) Finally i have noticed that if i don't let the disk spin down all of the way b4 ejecting it may happen as well.

These are the only common factors i have noticed when i run into that problem, but maybe it will help you or someone else solve it for both you and i.

In general I need a new computer, no questions asked. But right now, I want to fix this computer up since I'm giving it to my lil sister so she can play on it and put as much spyware on it as she wants lol.

What do you have the jumper setting set to? Do you have a CD-RW installed also?

Well if you only have the DVD installed check to see if its set to master, if it isnt then do so, and if there is a second drive make sure that the dvd drive is the master.
There could also be problems with over heating, So check to see if the drive is getting too hot.
There might be a problem with the Operating System, like malware or a virus.

so you may need to check what new and old software is in the machine.. any old cd burning software may need the flick..
Also check the multi core cable (IDE) any uneven cuts on the plugs, or signs of crush could be a cause of this type of problem..

Ghost, my jumper settings are fine and I don't have the CD-RW connected to any cables.

Und3rtak3r, restarting my computer is something I try to avoid since when I do that I kick my brother off the internet since he's online via the network we setup. All my CD burning software is up-to-date but I don't see the relation between the two, since I'm not using the CD burning software (Nero in this case) to access my drive in anyway yet. Also, the IDE cable is brand new, straight out of the box (round if it helps). It does do some twists and turns to get to the DVD-RW drive lol but not enough to cause it to stop working properly.

I would have to agree. I recently had similar problems and once I updated my drivers everything worked perfect...

What kind (brand) of DVD burner are you using?

I just saw the date on this so I would imagine the problem is already fixed :( Sorry.

If it is already fixed would you mind sharing what the problem was?

Sometimes the CD burner will still be in use by some CD burning software long after your done using the software, which sometimes will prevent you from ejecting... At least I have experienced this, other's my have no idea what I'm talking about? :).

hmm nope..only got worse..now I have 1 broken CD, 1 DVD drive that doesnt open and an extra IDE cable.

I never had the chance to try Undertakers advice. As I said, my DVD-RW is messed up and currently trying to get the warranty on it, but need to print something at my library but I'm kinda lazy..

You don't need a working DVD-RW to follow his advice ;).

Or does it not even show up in device manager? If this is the case then yes, you need a new one ;).

This could be! Have you tried to boot in safe mode? msconfig and select the system services only on startup and see if some other software is locking this device up. Very likely...
