AO features that you use

Hi folks. I'd like to get some insight into which features are being used and how. Everyone uses AO a little differently, I suspect, and I'm curious of what we appreciate and why.

Please note, this is *not* a bitch thread, to complain about things or wish for changes and ask for features. You can do that elsewhere. Simply put, I'd like to know what you currently use, and why or how it makes your experience at AO better/easier/less agravating.

I chose the following:
-Private Messages (or PM's)
-AntiPoint system
-Index/portal customization (main page display)

I chose the same ones as you, as they are the only features that I use on a regular basis.

Well I use search a lot too, but what message board would be complete without a search function?

Same as you.. lmao. The bottom three I don't use..

I used the journal a long time ago, so I checked that. I haven't made an entry in a long time.

Otherwise, the PM's to talke privately and APs to send quick positive or negative response.

Haven't experimented with the customization of the portal, didn't know about the notepad and never quite got what the bookmarks do.

I find myself using the site NotePad a fair bit, just type in random things i think of while reading threads etc.
i've got a few snippets of funky code that i made up while drunk once. still need to compile it and see if it does anything. :D

also the Ap system, it comes in handy if you have nothing worthwhile to contribute to the thread, you can just send some Ap's with a comment.

And the Pm system is brilliant, i've had some fantastic conversation's with a few members here. plus it comes in handy if you need to share information off the board.

Primarily PMs, Bookmarks and APs. I keep MS Word open with Check Spell and Grammar on, and almost always cut and paste any large responses.

Well...I use 1 and 2...have used 4...have used 5 ( but just to unload my browser bookmarks which was getting pretty full )...and once used 7...

never used 3 or 6.

I tried to at one time. Been awhile, I forget the details, but...


The plugin/thingy for Winamp only worked with Winamp 2.x IIRC. I use something similar for mIRC, so I wanted to extend it to AO. I took a look at the code and tried to hack it to work, but I'm not that serious a code writer, and I really didn't care that much.

AFAIK, it is COMPLETELY unused.

i used it once, i just googled for the version of winamp needed and installed the plugin and it worked.
But i'd rather use the newer version of winamp.

Me wonders if the admins might get the plugins updated to work with the newer winamp versions.?

There's probably a reason why no-one uses it, maybe because you have to use a outdated version of WinAmp just to use the Now playing option

so if the admins maybe re-coded the .xml file so that it would work with the newer version of WinAmp then maybe more people would use it.. ;)

Well, I imagine there may just be someone on staff at JupM with the skill and ability to write a new plugin. But I also bet they have a lot more pressing things to do.

In fact, I bet the original was written by a member with the skill. Why not take a crack at it yourself? I'd probably use it, if it as updated to work with Winamp 5.x

I would probably use it as well, again if it worked with the newest winamp of course.

I use the first 3 and I also use the RSS feed option, i wish the RSS option would give you a chunk of the first paragraph when my reader looks at it so I got a hint of what the article was about

Well... i dont know if im off topic here but the only "feature" of AO that i use - from time to time to tell the truth, for many years, even before open an account here - is surfing around its threads.

Interesting reading and cool stuff frequently...
