Help, no email.
Hi there,
I just tried to send an email from my pc upstairs and it won't send. I can receive them ok, but can't send anything.
It is an windows xp running mozilla suite. I have not changed any of the settings, the only change has been to move it upstairs. and I am not aware of having sent one since from up there.
My laptop works fine, so it is not the network here either I don't think
any ideas??

what email program do u use?
-
check the settings POP and SMTP and does the server need authenication? did you install any firewalls, antivirus, or junk mail programs?
-
IF you use outlook ( i doubt) but anyway make sure your incoming and outgoing servers are set correctly ( they should be set by ur isp)
-
Ok, I use Mozilla,
I have not changed any settings on this bit of software since I set it up, and it has been running fine for well over 7 months.
All that has happened, is that I have moved my computer upstairs in my house, and have had a few issues with the wireless hub. I was not able to get on line without a fight. Now I can get on line, and I can receive emails, but can no longer send them out.
What other info can I give, as once set up, I don't tend to fiddle, so I don't know what else can be done.
Will uninstalling and reinstalling Mozilla clear this problem up.?
-
If it helps, all settings for mozilla are identical on my desktop as they are for my Laptop. My laptop has no problems sending emails, but the desktop won't send them.

Hey Jonny, I had a word with Gordon Brown and Tony Blair, in between banning smoking in pubs, bars, caffs, private members clubs and the rest, they also banned Fronds..............we just don't want your e-mails..............
:p :D
Now, will people understand me when I appear cynical about freedoms and constitutional rights?
Ack! phttt!
:p

I can't say I completely understand, but adding politics and humour will dumb down my thread, so I will have to post another one.
well I spose who needs email these days.
Ah, your right Nihil, I'm gonna change my name, and throw my pc in the river, and dress how my mum told me to and be nice to women and stop getting laid and oh, just everything.
What ever Tony wants I'll do, he is the greatest, gee, he can play guitar......
In the meantime, does anyone have any advice for getting my email client working again?

Can you run packet captures inside and outside you firewall?
Compare what you see inside and outside and see if there is a diff... You don't need to know what you are looking at, just that there is a diff. If there is then your firewall may be causing your issue.
-
FI don't know how to run packet captures, is that like pinging an ip address?
I have the error message here that I get when I try to send from this pc.
An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: <Email address>: Recipient address rejected: Relay access denied. Please verify that your email address is correct in your Mail preferences and try again.
Now i have tried that with a portable email client that I have on my USB thumb, to the same addresses, it goes through on my laptop, but not on problem child 1.
As I write this, I notice a number of timing out warnings popping up asking to continue waiting or not, these say this:
avast! Connection timeout
Internet connection timeout elapsed. Continue waiting?
(mozilla.exe -> smtp.nildram.co.uk:25)
So either avast or my zonealarm seems to be preventing mozilla smtp thingy from connecting, yet on the firewall, both should be free to come and go as they please
Does this gice any more info
Much fun

Nope... Something else is wrong... The SMTP server does not believe that your computer is allowed to send mail out. Call the owner of the server to fix the problem.
-
I don't understand, I am with Nildram, and they provide us with a static IP as far as I am aware, they are not a mail server, that is down to my computer is it not. If what you say is right though, who do I contact, because our service provider as I said just supplies our internet connection?????
Very confused now

I think I have sussed it.
If I were to be linked up to a different wireless connection, from someone elses houes by mistake, that would stop it and make your post (Tiger Shark) suddenly a very useful post.
Thanks, you've cracked it. Cheers mate

So am I actually... But it's not the first time...
The server believes that your desktop is allowed to pass mail through it but it doesn't believe your notebook is allowed even though they both should, (technically), be coming from the same IP address.... Silly question... You sure that the notebook isn't connected to a wireless network that you don't own?
Best bet is still to contact the owner of your mailserver and ask them after explaining the situation... After all, it's their mail server telling you you can't do something.
-
Most mail servers will not accept mail from people not on their network....or will require some authentication.
Also some mail providers will block certain domains...known to allow spamming??
the error message is from thier server...thinking that you are trying to relay from another domain.
Are both computers using the same ISP for internet access????
Reset all your settings....passwords....my smtp server requires authentication....etc

OK, here goes:
I have a bloody stupid wireless dongly thing on my desktop, and wish I didn't.
The guy that set up our network is a big fat man who has been into it since I was in short trousers, and thinks he has done a good job.
I've seen him do the washing up once, so I don't beleive him. But I have to work around it if I can.
Our wirless network does not appear on the windows wireless networks list, but two others do, and I was connected to one of them, but when I unchecked the "automatically connect even if it is not the prefferred network" I could see from the wireless connection status, that I was connected.
So I tried the browser, and it just did the resolving thing again, which it always did before my fat mate changed the channel, so I wandered off, came back, and there it was all connection fine, and now I can email too.
So simply put, I was connected to the wrong network, so most likely a different ISP without knowing. Incidentally, is there a way to find out what ISP you are connected to if say you take advantage of a wireless network in a pub or cafe that is becoming trendy these days??
I'd give you anti points, but apparently I have to spread the love first, but thanks very usefull
Lets just be Fronds

Drop to a command line and type tracert www.google.com
That will give you the hops it takes to get to google......the first one will be the wireless access...then should be the ISPs routers....
