Hi there guys
I just installed the 6600 GT a few days ago. For some reason during gameply my PC will just freeze and I will have to reboot by pressing the reset button. I am using XP SP2. IF anyone can think of anything please post here.

Maybe not in this order but here are a few things to try.
Run all of your av stuffs in safe mode
Update all drivers and yes ALL drivers
Check to see if the manufacturer has a list of known hardware issues/conflicts with any of the other stuff in your box
try it in a second box and see how it reacts
check your heat inside the box big cards= big heat
check power consumption if you do something particularly resource heavy you could be trying to use more power than your PSU can push
FYI: I didnt double post this if you read the other thread you would have seen that. The other thread has nothing to do with my PC locking up, I should know, I posted it :D
check the card is not getting too hot ........
some of the GPX cards do not have a sufficiently effective heat sink
you may need to add a decent one like these
I'll second foxy, sounds like something overheating.
You overclocking the card at all?
Howdy.
I'm going to be different here, and would suggest that maybe before starting up a high end game, maybe turn your Firewall and AntiVirus off.
That way you free up a heap of system resources and therefore your high end game won't fight for system resources, therefore it should stop wanting to freeze, thus needing a hard reboot..
I have solved many freezing incident's by simply turning antivirus and firewall off while playing those high end games.
Just make sure your disconnected from the internet before turning either one off, while playing the game. ;)

In reply to Foxy and Asp: how exactly do I view how hot my card is and that the fan is working? Is there a particualr program I can use. In reply to Front: I play my games online so turing my AV and firewall off is a no no, lets just say I am not taking that chance again. Just before i turned on my PC today my screen color was totally disorintated, hazzy and color lines running vertical everywhere. I switched off immediatelly, pulled out the card and plugged it back in. Now it seems to be fine. I am getting extremely worried as this is a new card. If anyone has a proggie for me to monitor the card properly please feel free to share as it is probaly overheating.

write all components and models of your pc in detailplease.That always helps to quickly assess your system and point us in right direction.
If you upgraded video card but nothing else then most likely other components struglle to cope.
Pls detail of your system .(my first pick would be overheating or not enough memory

Amd Athlon 2000+, 640 ram @ 266, A7N266-Vm motherboard. I also think its the heat. Is there a program I can use to view my cards temp and fan speed etc.
I dont have fans on my case and it seems my card is getting to hot. I put my deskfan and opened my case to just test if it is that. I just played for an hour and it didnt lock up so it looks like the heat. So can anyone give me a proggie so i can monitor it. If no one replies soon ill have to make a new thread.

Read up on it as it's not for novice users, and if anything it should give you an idea on what temperatures you are getting.

hmm Dalek I have installed this proggie. However I might be noob however I dont know how to actually find my card speed and temp. Anyone that has used this before please let me know.

Yes do Do get the hard drive temp and 1 fan speed on the left. Now is that my CPu fan or what. Could you help me configure this if it isnt too much trouble...
On the left - I get Fan1 and its speed. On the right I get 6 temps (incl HDD temp). Temp 1 = 30C, Temp2 & 3 = 0, Temp4 = -32C, Temp5 = 41C and the last is my HDD = 26C.
your 6600gt is pci-e or agp? if agp did you connect the power cable to it? if not then better do so it have a major impact on its stability , also could be the psu. download prime95 & everest

run prime95 & everest (goto computer-->sensor) then start the stress testing in prime95 and while its doing it goto the everest window wait for 10-15mins and write down on paper the lowest the +3.3v/+5v/+12v gets then stop the stress testing in prime95 and close it & everest and report back with the voltages
AGP and I did connect power cable to it :D I will download those programs and report back in 24 hours ...
I don't think fnding how how hot your card is is really all that important right now. It's too hot and you already know that. A good way to test your card temp for free is to open the case and put your finger on the heat sink. It it hurts it's too hot.
But seriously you've said you don't have any fans in your case, an Athlong 2000 can still generate a lot of heat, as will your HD and GFX card. You shoudl get a couple of cheap 80mm fans into your case. 1 at the front sucking in and 1 at the back blowing out. That'll drop the temp a lot for a start. Look in your case and see how tidy it is. Try to clear loose cable out the way to improve airflow (just with cable ties etc nothing fancy). Maybe change your IDE cables to round versions.
Try that and if you are still running hot then you might need to look at things like the Zalman coolers Foxy suggests.

I was trying hard to find specifications for your motherboard but asus doesnt keep it any more.
(which tells me this motherboard is old and not that great).I did managed to find this review.You guys have a look .I dont like few things for a start this mobo has agp4x slot. Your video card is agp8x.
Just from reading your system os xp amd2000,640mg memory (which memory??)and this board and as you disribed your case i am afraid this is not good enough system for this card let alone playing games.on top of that you DONT have a fan in your case.
i dont try and want to sound negative about it , but hope other guys can see where i am coming from.
Gaming case without fans=maybe vapochil case. some new thermaltake fanless systems but classic cases no way gaming without fans(my thermaltake gaming case has 7 of them).
i do belive this system has no hope to be gaming one.

I dont know if that system is upgradable.I think pretty much you would need nearly all knew components.
Before you decide what box you plan to build(when you have more clear idea what do you need your pc for and BUDGET) then post here we will try to come to some suggestion.There are already some posting about recomendation for building new system so look around previous post here first.

Get an exhaust fan this is a flat device that takes up a PCI slot (it doesn't need the PCI connection as it has a molex connector for power) The rotor blades look a bit like a hovercraft and the exit is about 3 inches by 1/3 of an inch. It will dump about 40 cubic feet of air a minute.
At the back of your case you shold also have the mountings and grilles (loads of perforations) for one or maybe two case fans these are typically 80mm, although 120mm is possible.
Please make sure that there is a reasonable space between your case and the wall...........at least a foot (12") would be ideal.
I suspect that you have made a classic mistake and put in a video card that is a bit too powerful for your existing equipment. I would be inclined to underclock it in that situation. The 6600 does not like being overclocked anyway ;)
And think about your monitor..................I keep telling people that there is no point having a $500 video card and a $100 monitor!...............you need balance mate!

Hi there nihil - I underclocked it before i read this post and it seems to be fine now. Im hopefully getting a new case tomorrow and will follow your instructions. Call me a noobie however I have never had a case fan nor have I installed one. Could you please explin how to do this. Does the fan get plugged into the motherboard etc, does the fan come with instructions? Also something that has been bothering me - when I get my new motherboard and case will the motherboard coem with instructions as I havent build a pc before, the screws how to connect the restart and on/off button etc. Thanks for all your help guys.

It attaches into a PCI/ASA space, but does not need the mounting, so with a decent sized tower it will fit below the motherboard. It is held in by a single screw just like a PCI card.
Your case may have instructions, your motherboard certainly will. If you have never done it before you might consider getting a local PC store or a knowledgeable person to do it for you?

Hi there Nihil - I upgraded from a 17" CRT to a 19" CRT flat, wow what a difference. I am running 1280 * 1024 @ 85 HZ. Is this alright. What resolutions do you guys normally use. Thanks.

Glad you like it. I generally use 800 x 600 for e-mail, forums, and office type stuff, otherwise 1024 x 768 for surfing, photoediting etc. both at 85Hz (17")

i use 800 x 600 for just about everything. When i game i go up to 1600 x 1200.
Im going to try change my AGP for Pci express - dunno if they will allow it...

From a previous post you say that you have a A7N266-Vm
As far as I know that will NOT support PCI-e technology..............it is an old board with a 200/266 FSB, AGP 4x and probably supports an Athlon up to XP2400.
I think that your current AGP video card outguns your motherboard as it stands

You cannot really upgrade that kit sensibly in my opinion.
There is a whole new generation of technology out there:motherboards, processors, RAM, video cards.....................

ninil I know that - I am saying if I can change my AGP for PCI express i will get a pci motherboard rather than an AGP. Anyway its hard to find a good agp motherboard nowadays and PCI is the new thing so rather go that, than have to upgrade in 6 months time.
No my friend, that is not the way to do it.
Start with your performance requirements and what you can afford and build a balanced system around that.
DO NOT build a box around a peripheral, which is what a video card is. Also remember that a lot of this stuff has actually advanced beyond the capability of current software to use it.
RAM is the most flexible, component because it is easily added and you do not have to buy it all at once.
I would start with the processor/motherboard combination that you want, then the best RAM to support them. Then look at your video card.
