Hello everyone.
Didnt see any other posts but if there are a mod can fussion them. Anyway have a good drunken St Patricks Day. Except in the states where due to a class action brought by the ACLU it is politically incorrect to use the religious name for the day :D. So if anyone finds me and :drink:

Incidentally, the St. Patrick's Day celebrations are not religious. They are cultural and ethnic, as St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. It is effectively the national day of Irish communities throughout the World.
Ireland actually has three patron saints, the other two being Brighid and Columncille. These would be religious feastdays, but without the cultural/ethnic celebrations.

Sorry Nihil for this once I am going to have to disagree with you. St Pats day is the feast day of saint patrick and it is meant to commemorate the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. So originally it was a religious festival. Now it is just an excuse to get drunk and green and be Irish. :D Everyone welcome.
Hey MURACU don't get me wrong. We are talking patron saints, so there is an underlying religious connotation. However for many years that has been overlaid with the cultural/ethnic thing.
Many years ago you would have seen the exact same in England on St. George's day...............nobody bothers these days.

We both know of communities where those celebrations would be closer to the 4th. July than a religious event..........................it will be 90 years this time.....................
As for the ACLU, they actually have considered St. Valentine's day and St. Patrick's day AFAIK

Tis true, why there are more people who turn out for that very Irish parade's thay have in New York and Boston, and Chicago (where they turn the river green, yuuuck) then there are in all of Ireland.... :p
I think they have the parades to offset their guilt for leaving the old country, sort of bonds them...I mean confessions just don't do it.... :D

Well just coming back to normal after St patricks day. I tried to post in the we are drunk thread but I couldn't see the screen so i dropped it after about 1 hour and two pass outs. Anyway hope you guys and gals all had a good one.

I am probably showing my age. I guess the definition of periscope depth is the length of the tube, which was about 60 feet maximum IIRC.
The question is then where do you measure depth from. I believe our guys used to use the base of the keel, which would probably account for the anomaly?
Anyway, it is all old hat now? our new Astute class uses photonic masts ;)

Boy that was a read, what's funny is when (this was one of my jobs onboard) you load a red grenade instead of a green grenade, and fire it and be in the control room (I used to read off bearings for the skipper on the attack scope during battle exercises) and my alternate watchman would be responsible for firing the pyros, and the skipper would say load a green grenade (which when fired indicated to the skimmers that they just received a fish courtesy of the RCN), then "fire" and he would like to watch from the scope, and once instead of green it was red, well the look on his face was priceless, and he froze, instead of carrying out emergancy surface procedures, which in the meantime all of the ASW units are scrambling out of the way because the red grenade indicates Sub in distress, and they don't want us coming up under them.Quote:

That skipper nearly went ballistic with the guy who loaded the wrong grenade, almost throttled him (mostly because of all of the reports he would have to write up)....
Usually the skipper will level out at 65', and raise the search scope, for the attack scope it's a little higher 60', and he is able to lower to get a better shot, as the fish is wire guided from the attack scope.....(sounds like a TuT to me eh!)
I'm surprised the skipper didn't make him get out and walk home for that one. I prefere staying on the surface of the sea myself. but still it takes all sorts :D.
The only thing I dont like about going to war in a boat....there's no-where to run when the **** hits the fan!!
Ahhh but the trick is they have to find you first, when you say boat, I am assuming you mean a submarine, because you can carry a boat on a ship, but you can't carry a ship on a boat.(just some Naval stuff for ya)....:-)Quote:

Still prefer a ship Dalek. At least a ship has a fairly good chance of surviving a hit. For submarines even a near hit can be fatal. Also if the ship does start to go down, unless you are in the engine room, you have even odds of getting off her. Unless it is a gas tanker. Then ,depending on the gas being transported, you have about 30 seconds to get half a mile away. Run forrest run............
Can you imagine my disappointment when I was on my mates 'V' boat (HMS Vengence I think..) and we asked him where the perescope was and he pointed to a monitor in the corner of the control room :( It still goes up and down you just don't see it. The conning tower was empty too :(
Not so,, ships are built as thin as the skin on new cars, did you ever see any of the pictures of the UK frigates during the Falklands, and how exocet missiles launched from Mirages were playing havoc with the ships and it turned out that the majority of the problems with the ships burning so fast, is that they had a lot of 'Aluminum" in their bulkheads, not only is it a soft metal, but when it is flashed it can burn like tungsten, that is why this happenedQuote:

Hey Aspman, that would be dissapointing, we used to laugh at our lookout officer on the search scope, you got to sit and rotate it around, and in the control room in dark lighting these guys would start snoring so loud you would think we were snorting (charging the batteries)..
Little late but happy paddy's day. I spent mine in Savannah, GA getting trashed! I had to be @ work @ 8am the following morning so I took my last Carbomb @ 3:30 am and started my trek home.......its about a 4 hour drive. Finally got to work (still trashed) and worked till midnight that same day......

Well, I called in the Pub today...............it is the only Irish one for some (walking/staggering) around distance................ they had a raffle and an "Irish" quiz on the night with all proceeds going to the Royal National Lifeboat Institute..............which is still responsible for the Republic Of Ireland...........and the only English outfit that is (apart from the Royal Airforce............but that is only after 9/11 ;) ) still responsible for the whole of the British Isles.
So the landlady says "Eileen and yerself won the quiz, Johnno"
"Oh! I said, that's nice, was it close?"..................."No, she says, they were all idjits.........the next only got half of what you did"
I suppose we got 7/10 on the first section (general knowledge), 9 or 10/10 on the second (history), 10/10 on the third (geography & geology) and 16/20 on the recognise the people picture questions.........and we were the only team to recognise Michael Collins, for example............but being related it would possibly have been embarassing not to?
Anyway we have a slap up evening meal as a prize.................
