installation problems
ok i have upgraded everything m/b, mem, hdd, gcard, cpu, sound exempt fdd and cdrom and psu 400watts. When i install windows on the hdd it formats ok then installs windows files, after it resets it freezes on the m/b screen at the start (as in the name or type of m/b) thats as far as it goes, when i reset it starts up ok but stops on the windows loading screen, it also done this with the old hdd so i cant be a hdd problem, ive ran out of solutions ne help??
Many thanks

Well if it freezing on start...before windows loads...I believe you have a hardware problem??
Either a bad piece\card or misconfigured in the bios???
More info on board type and cards installed would probably help???

m/b rs400a, mem ddr 400, cpu pentuim d, psu 400w, gcard 512mb ati

Or maybe an incompatibility issue...
check to see if all the parts can work together...
-
Do you get any BIOS beeps??
I have a suspicion it's the PSU... You should probably get one with more amperage... Especially on the 12v for that vid card of yours...
Unplug the FDD the CD ROM, hell even the HDD to see if you can atleast smoothly enter the CMOS settings... Or if you want take out the HDD and CD ROM and place a bootable floppy in the FDD... After you do this and you avoid the freezing start adding components one at a time... Like I said, it sounds like a weak PSU... Possibly even faulty ram but not likely...
How old is the PSU and what are the specs? What was it powering before you upgraded everything?
-
ever thing is new exempt the fdd hdd cdrom(s) and psu, i removed the fdd and cdroms and it booted ok, dont wanna sound silly but whats the next step i need to take?
-
You need a better Power Supply... Maybe no one with more watts, but one that supplies more amps, sorry I can't explain right now, I'm in school...
Oh and make sure the HDD is on it's own IDE channel... Put the cd drives on the second channel and the HDD on the first....

ok dude ive got to the welcome screen and windows is installed properly, i changed the psu and the cdrom. Sometimes thou when i restart the computer it is still resetting its self at different times before the windows loading screen comes up. when i switched it on it boots up to the welcome screen, i then log on, then i restart it and sometimes it just keeps resetting b4 the windows loading but sometimes it doesnt!!!!!!!!ne ideas?????????

Heat? Did you use a good cpu cooler? Is it installed correctly? Did you use a cooling paste?
-
yes, it only resets its self when i restart the computer, once ive logged onto window i dont have any problems that occur its just when i restart the pc, it resets its self and sometimes freezes on the very first screen the one with the mother board name!

Man, your going to have to be a lot more specific, give every little detail you can...
What are the specs of the new PSU you installed? How old is it? Why did you change the CD drive?
I'm assuming most of the problems you were experiencing before were resolved once you changed the PSU?
But on occasion you still experience random reboots and freezes at the mobo splash screen?
Well, you could try resetting the cmos just for the heck of it, but I doubt that will solve anything.
If my assumptions are correct, then something is telling me that since your PSU was faulty (we know this since most of your problems went away when you replaced it), your mobo might be on it's way out as well... When PSU's go bad they like to take things with it...

As a process of elimination type of exercise I would get the diagnostic program from your HDD manufacturer's site and run that.
Then test your RAM:
http://www.memtest86.com/
TheDuck has a good point. If you had a defective PSU it might have damaged other things. Your symptoms sound rather like damaged RAM to me?
:(

I was thinking ram problem as well, but he said the computer boots normally and runs fine most of the time... He says it freezes or reboots at the mobo splash screen... Is the ram even in use at this part of the booting process? I don't think so...

The Duck
I could be very wrong here mate, but I would have said no RAM = no PC. You might get a couple of beeps out of the BIOS to warn you?
To start with it uses the first 640k then up to 1024k, then it tests the extended memory. My thinking was that if you have damaged RAM rather than a totally dead stick, you might get some weird results?
I would suggest:
1. Clean and reseat everything, and check the cables
2. Try replacing the cables
3. Run the HDD and RAM tests
4. Go into BIOS and turn off all power saving schemes (snooze as well)
5. Turn off screensaver and any fancy wallpaper.
6. Disable "fast boot" in the BIOS
I am afraid that when you are faced with an intermittent fault, you have to use trial and error.
;)

No nihil, you are very right :). I must have lost my mind temporarily ...
Unfortunately there are 2 (maybe more) possibilities that could be intermittent... If your ram turns out to be good, then I would bet on a faulty mobo...
-
and after alot trail and error the new mobo i bought was faulty guys, thanks for all your help

hmm sorry to pop in late. But could it off been a case of installing a 32bit version on a 64bit computer? or vice versa?
i know i get huge issues when i do this on accident..
