PCs have charm; Macs ooze pretension. When I sit down to use a Mac, the first thing I think is, "I hate Macs", and then I think, "Why has this rubbish aspirational ornament only got one mouse button?" Losing that second mouse button feels like losing a limb. If the ads were really honest, Webb would be standing there with one arm, struggling to open a packet of peanuts while Mitchell effortlessly tore his apart with both hands.
Personally, I like Window's feng shui...

windows works for me just fine .. when you set it right remove all the crap from it secure it works without a problem !

Actually it is fairly predictable marketing hype. Macs always used to be rather more expensive that PCs, but I think that Vista (the top editions at least) will quite possibly have changed that.
My initial impressions of Vista is that there is possibly a version missing? There is a Home Basic, but no business version that does not have Aero.
If you look around most businesses you will see that their operations software hasn't really changed that much since Win 3.11/DOS. Purchase invoices, sales invoices, sales order processing, inventory management, word processing, spreadsheets and the like.............you don't need fancy graphics for that;)
On the other hand you do want the security features.
I don't think we'll see PCs become more expensive... I think we'll see the playing field level out.... Apple is hurting if they don't get a new OS out in the near future and I don't know that they are in a position to do that...Quote:

As a Side note I find it funny that everyone is up in arms that Vista requires modern hardware, but nobody cries when video games drive the hardware industry by requiring ridiculous specs.
That just made my day. hahahahaha.Quote:

As for the Apple commericals, well, you gotta hand it to them. They are inaccurate depictions of an Apple/PC comparison which only an idiot would fall for - considering the typical user...that's brilliant marketing.
Here are the UK versions of those ads, I must admit I like these ones (if I must like one or the other...) more then the North American versions...funny actually North America is forever ripping off the UK's TV shows (The Office etc) and now it's reversed, but yet still the UK version is better...:D

Apple better than Windows? No. MACS are good if your the *artist* type. Also, all the *Sunday ads* are made with MACS. If your a gamer then your also, SOL. A lot of the new pc games are for windows not MACS.Quote:

For security, Vista is MORE SECURE THAN ANY MAC OS. In Vista they added a lot more security features.
If you want a more secure operating system then get *Windows Vista*.

Dalek...I think that is probably the funniest thing I have read in a long time

Hello. Charlie Brooker here.
I wrote this piffle. Then it was subbed. And whoever subbed it decided to add a bit describing Doom as “the first shoot-em-up game”.
Words fail me.
They also changed every abbreviation -– so “they’re” becomes “they are” and “it’s” becomes “it is”, and so on -- presumably in an attempt to inject a bit more plodding, impersonal joylessness to the whole thing.
Bet they did it on a Mac, too.

Vista won't change that.. Macs have been comparable in price to PCs running windows since they switched to intel chips. It was the motorola chips that made them more expensive..Quote:

And you know.. everytime I use OSX I get prompted to allow things to occur... It used to be that everybody on the Mac camp thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread that the system knew you needed more permissions and then asked.. Now they are using it against Vista???
OSX and apple products in general are DRM'ed to death.. Right now they have more restrictions on what you can do with media you have purchased than any other group of consumer products. Look at all of the lawsuits aimed at apple because of the way they force you to use itunes if you buy an ipod.
I also love the argument that OSX is unix... I always have to ask, "It is???" I don't recall the Open Group ever giving OSX a SUS certification... At best it is unix-like...
OSX is clearly not Unix, it is a particular distribution of FreeBSD, Unix-like.
I still don't completely follow as to why anybody gives a damn, is anyone making you use either system? No. Stop complaining.
Hey Hey,
Here's what I'd like to call "How to keep an OS X user busy for hours"..
It's rather simple... You just take an article filled with factual arguments and then throw one mistake in at the very end (completely unrelated to the factual arguments)... The result is great.. You end up with pages of comments regarding the one mistake, while nobody is willing to comment on the facts of the actual discussion... In fact when you readdress them they respond with "You're an idiot why should we discuss that"... Yet claim they aren't zealots..
I highly recommend the read:
http://www.computerdefense.org/?p=250 (especially the comments).
Peace,
HT
Throw in one mistake? Are you saying you did it on purpose? You were shown to be gullible and couldn't even admit it. pfftQuote:

Huh? Did you even read the replys to your comments?Quote:

You still haven't learned much about interacting with people, have you?
I'm saying we had (the night before) discussed "Artie McStrawman" and how it couldn't possibly be a real person... and yes I did read the responses... it was all "You're an idiot artie is fake" the few that attempted to respond quickly turned to name calling and Microsoft insults... the one or two that did have good discussion didn't read and attacked based on their failure to read everything... The only redeeming lights have been the last couple of people.Quote:

Like they provide us with a living?...................... now, ask yourself this: "if I were a Linux support guy, would I make more than an M$ support guy?"
Where I am, I would starve on Linux................ bloody poverty pleading geeks :chuck:
I'm not sure you'd starve on Linux here in the States. But these big shops
like I work in now are usually dedicated one way or the other. Currently I
work in an outsourced IT dep't at a mfg'er here in Shawnee country. The
desktops, the servers, strictly Windows.
BUT, and that's a big BUT, this company does a lot of linux development
(SUSE 10) for their equipment (inventory and machine tools). That part
is not outsourced to us. My unnamed employer does have a Linux division
from what I understand, but I know little of it at this point. I can't say I'm
going to be happy with this job in a few months once the transition's made
from in-house IT to outsourced IT. There's a lot going on and I was able
to come in and hit the ground running. It's very chaotic and busy. I like
chaos. :)
I know some IT guys in a couple of local gov'ts and Linux is widely used there.
One young cat is Linux-certified and doing well for a municipality of 250,000.
Also, many ISP's and hosters use it. I suspect it's more widely used there
than you think.
Hey, brokencrow, please do not misunderstand me here :)
SuSE is the Linux route for commerce IMHO, given the recent Nove££/M$ arrangement? ;)
I think that you are otherwise talking Unix? which is proprietary software, rather than open source?
just my £0.02 mate :D
No, I'm talking Linux. Amazon has several warehouses nearby where I work
and a big one in Lexington, KY. My understanding from several employees
I've known there is they use Linux for the most part. Out in the warehouse,
where we would be using a W2K (soon to be XP) machine, they use a Linux
terminal. L-i-n-u-x.
SUSE is not the only commercial route to Linux. I was having coffee one
morning last year with a sysadmin who's put a group of health care offices
into Red Hat gateway/servers. Of course, he wasn't too willing to discuss
other details (this is a rather opaque business when you come down to it).
But then, I routinely talk to a small hosting outfit who shies away from RH,
claiming it is shot full of vulnerabilities since it went proprietary after version
7.
IT is a lot like love: ask 10 people what love is and you'll get 10 different answers. ;)
