Kevin Mitnick was never a hacker, he didn't hack programs, he was known as a cracker, but even then he really didn't crack much, he would be better described as just a Social Engineer type of guy, he had the ability to engineer people into giving him the answers that he wants/wanted.
But even at the end of the day he was and still is not nothing special. He might of been good back in the days, but he used a lot of stuff that was already out there...
It's kind of like saying that Ankit Fadia didn't steal other peoples work, put it all into a book and claim it as he's own, and is actually a uber leet cracker.
You shouldnt believe everything you hear. Was he a hacker? Yes. Im not sure what classifies a *master hacker* however I would assume maybe something like thisQuote:

But I guessQuote:
. The Department of Justice describes him as "the most wanted computer criminal in United States history." His exploits were detailed in two movies: Freedom Downtime and Takedown.
Let's see how long you can elude from the FBI for. I bet not as long as him. Also, hes a security consultant now with his own security firm. The guy knows his sh1t. If he didnt he obviously wouldnt be in the security field to begin with.Quote:

I think there are more jealous people out their and haters who hate on this man. IMO, if you can go on a *coast to coast* hacking spree , elude the FBI for a few years and still being able to breach network security, database security, server secuity and come out of federal PRISON (not state prison) and still open up your own security firm and make a honest living doing something that you love to do you're a bad motherphucker you know it and I know it. Google his ass you might be surprised what you find.
Mitnick was a petty fraudster, and not much more than that. His "skill" was getting caught and imprisoned TWICE for such offences. Skillful criminals always get caught (NOT)?
Oh yeah! 5 years and 8 months cumulatively?.......... err.......... not so long ago there was this female supply teacher who faced 40 years because of porno pop-ups that appeared on her inadequately protected school-provided Windows 98 box..........Quote:

The whole thing is a sick joke, and shows the total ignorance and inadequacy of the authorities. "most wanted computer criminal"........... sure but for that read "the only one we know about"
He simply saw the potential at an earlier stage, and managed to get himself caught, so he was dumber than the people chasing him.
Avoiding the FBI.............. not that difficult? terrorists seem to manage quite well?
Media hype for the most............. anyone asked JP for an interview recently?
Anyone can put a shingle outside their door........... that does not make them what they claim to be. Once a conman always a conman......... only some cons are legal.Quote:

This is like the RIAA and MPAA ................... blame the defects of your industry on "file swappers" ................... all those companies who claimed to have lost millions of dollars were actually taking the opportunity to "lose" their budget overruns and marketing shortfalls. Mitnick was a Godsend to them .................. If I didn't disbelieve in conspiracy theories, I would almost think that they paid him to take the rap......... just like that British foreign currency rogue trader a few years back ;)
Mitnick is about as 1337 as this guy:
http://www.usdoj.gov/criminal/cyberc...inkaIndict.htm
but small fry by comparison :D
Well regardless of what various members of the "community" think, Mitnick just the same was talented, I've read a good chunk of his book Art of Deception, and there's a lot of knowledge packed in it. If for nothing else i commend him for not being afraid to give knowledge practical knowledge useable out the book to both the layman and hacker alike.
Independent of the terms you use to describe him, in my opinion he has more skill then most of us will ever have. As you might have guessed, he's kind of my hero,
mr.mitnick
Speak for yourself kid................ me, i've forgotten more about computers than mitnick will ever know............
He wouldn't have encountered punched cards or tapes........... analogue machines, vacuum drives...... no visual display interfaces...........
He is a petty criminal........... a hero, like Bonnie and Clyde; who appeals to some sort of LUSER mentality..............
OK kid.............. they tell me that WW cyber crime is $13 billion........... the "good guys" don't get caught........
Do we.........? :bigpimp:
Hey, didn't mean to offend. I'm actually trying to learn, not get on here and fight. Just looking for someone to learn from. Definitely not implying you don't know what your talking about. Right now I'm actually trying to find out how to post topics. I cant find a button anywhere!! Point it out?,
Alex
Hello Alex,
Please go to the front page and look at the upper right quadrant....... look for "site menu".............then select "discussion forums" and after that, select the forum of the topic you think what you want to post belongs in.
Hey, don't worry too much, either it is obvious or it isn't............... and lots of posts for help end up in the wrong forum when we find out what the actual problem was :D
Us Mods will move things if needed ;)
But regardless of his social eng. skills, he sure got a lot of publicity. With his own wikipedia entry these days. Maybe some of us are jealous?
mmm. Madeline McCann is still getting a lot of publicity. Now the HP books have joined the crowd. Publicity is not a function of importance/ability/relavence. Certain things just catch the media and get blown WAAAAY out of proportion. Its one of the reasons I generally shun the news. Any idiot can get himself on the news and become famous.
Not the first of his kind, but the first to generate such media face-time. Nothing special, but a great entry-level reference for social engineering.
In reality, he comes off as a self-importrant, self absorbed douchebag. Are true 'hackers' like that? Wouldn't you rather learn and test and experiment in private? Above that...would you want a media deal AFTER you got busted for it? He's capitalizing on his name, nothing more.
O
Ard~ has a good point. The people we know about are the ones who are self-publicising media creations or are those who have been caught.
David L Smith?............. he wrote the "Melissa" virus........... he also wrote the "Microsoft Office 97 Poppy Macro Virus Generation Toolkit".......... it is very slick with its own help file and instruction manual.......... but when you look at the metadata you find that the guy used his own legitimately registered copy of Office 97  what a bozo! Actually, I got a very nice e-mail from an FBI Supervisory Special Agent when I passed that little "gem of wisdom" on to them :D
If you want to look at really skillful stuff just check out the Magistr virus. Written in assembly code (mostly) with polymorphic capabilities and twin encryption engines. I guess the bit where it tries to flash your BIOS is a bit nasty, but we all keep a spare don't we?
That was written by a Russian guy about my age ..... he never got caught, and he wrote a lot of "quality" malware (technically speaking).
Anyone who thinks that Mitnick was/is tecnically talented must positively revere the author of the "lovebug" a.k.a. "I love you" VBS script virus?
Witch is obviously half the clowns that have replied to this thread.. :rolleyes:Quote:

I was working for this weponz of mass destruction outfit...... I had my own little cave, and this big project office............ the General Infrastructure Support team and myself sort of "got on" :drink:
So I wrote this little 4 line .reg and persuaded the secutity officer to add it to the logon script one morning.................
So, the "lovebug" arrives, and I get a GIS phonecall (I got helpdesk stuff until one of them got into work)............. what does all this mean? what do I do?.............like we have an EVP on the line here :D
I said, and may God be my witness:
1. Correct all spelling, grammar and syntax errors.
2. Correct all VBS coding errors
3. Beef up the payload.
4. Send it to some bastard who really deserves it.
I guess that was the correct answer, because later that day, the steward of the onsite club rang me to say that I had 11 gallons of beer on the house....
The General Infrastructure Support team thought I was "one of them" after that.................
As Bill the Cat would say: ack phtt!
The thing that got Mitnick really recognized was all of the myths and half-truths that were floating everywhere. Its like the phone game(or whatever it is called now) One person talks about something then the other person tells someone else and on. Turns completely into something different in the end. Not to mention that 2600 may have had a "Teeny Weeny" part in spreading his name.
On another note. Didnt his websites get hacked last year or something??? Doesnt that say anything to anyone calling him a 'hacker hero'? Im not saying Im the greatest in securing my websites but I also didnt get famous(infamous?) for being some uber leet haxor.
Edit: Woot! 100th post!
Nope it wasn't he's website that got hacked, it was the hosting company's server that got hacked, the attackers where then able to navigate around the different accounts with admin rights, they found the Mitnick file and just edited the index file.Quote:

Kevin Mitnick is a lying, over-rated douche.
In case anyone was wondering, Kevin is for sale. Just do a Yahoo! Search and look towards the bottom of the screen:
Amazon.com - Low prices on Kevin mitnick. Qualified orders over $25 ship free.
I KNEW they were still doing cloning.......Just why kevin mitnick??? LOLQuote:
