Can someone please help walk me through the steps to get my sound back, it sounds like such a quick fix, but someone please help me:(
I'm assuming the beeps are comming from the mother board speaker not your sound card. so a couple questions need to be answered.
1. What OS are you running?
2. Have you checked to see if the drivers are installed?
If the drivers are not installed... then thats the reason.
by the way welcome to AO :)
Ah, I have so been through this. I posted a thread on this no more than a month ago.
Given that it's a T60, it's going to likely boil down to only a few possibilities:
1. Hit the Lenovo support site and download Thinkvantage System Update. It will check for any missing drivers.
2. Also make sure you have the Windows XP (if you're running XP) hotfix for T60 audio. Speakers won't work without it. Thinkvantage System Update should automatically list it as an available download. It has to do with a problem with your particular Intel chipset.
3. If that doesn't do it, check the sound buttons on the laptop itself (located to the right of the Esc key) and make sure it's not muted. Note, however, those buttons won't work unless you have the software installed for them.
4. Make sure the speakers are plugged into the motherboard. The speakers are located at the front-lower end of the laptop.
If it's under warranty, call support. Has sound worked before? What was the last thing you did before losing sound?
By the way, it's a really bad idea to have your e-mail address as your username. You're begging for spam.
I thought the title looked familiar :) I'm already getting into weekend mode :drink: so am not paying much attention at the moment :)Quote:

Yep, if you want to see a real T60 sound nightmare, check out this thread.
Sound has worked before, I been thru IBM, I've installed every driver I can think of, lol, I did all of that, at the bottom of my screen on the toolbar it says, no soundMAX audio present, every thing is plugged up right, all I did was: when I got the laptop it had XP on it, I decided to buy Vista(big mistake bc it blows), so I didn't like vista and I took it to the guy that always does my computer work and he got XP back on there and all the old stuff, BUT he couldn't get the sound to work, and he's already been here asking for help too. There is no warranty on this laptop, I bought it from ebay over a year ago. Any other suggestions? Thanks for everyones help on this.
Hi Guys, and welcome to potterdood,
Yep, an immediate sense of deja vu there :D
Mind you, potter~ did say "get my sound back" whereas it seemed like the machine AK was looking at never had it in the first place?
I suggest that you follow the suggestions so far and look at the other thread, then get back to us with any results.
Remember to try the headphones outlet test ;)
Yes, answer each of the numbered questions I asked you in the other thread. Whatever answers those yield should give us a clear idea of what's going on. You still haven't tried all my suggestions.
Also, this is going to get confusing FAST with you bouncing back and forth between the two threads. Let's pick a thread and stick with it.
AngelicKnight, we have the same problem, did yours get corrected? I have a blue box at the bottom with a red thing on it, the red thing is the no symbol, like no smoking etc... and it says No SOUNDMAX audio present, ever see that before?
It means you system isn't seeing the device. Did you follow ALL the steps that were gone through on the previous post? If you have the post the finding to those results.
It isn't under warranty, I had someone put XP on here and everything works right but the sound. And I have the no sound box at the bottom, so it's like there is not a driver for it or something.Quote:

3) Fresh install of Windows XP Pro SP2.
4) Have Googled the crap out of this to discover lots of people have the same problem.
5) Installed this: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/si...cid=MIGR-62855
6) Installed this: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/si...cid=MIGR-64133 (note 888111).
7) Enabled System Sound in BIOS.
8) Enabled modem in BIOS (believe it or not this has supposedly fixed the problem for some folks).
9) Uninstalled and reinstalled driver again.
There is a fresh install of xp pro sp2, i installed both of those things too, idk how to do #7 or 8, and I went to ibm.com/support and added those drivers, everything i thought would help to d/l I did.
Maybe #7 or 8 could be the key...?
With all due respect, I don't understand how you expect us to help when you ignore half of what's asked you. For the third time:

1. Speakers connected to mobo (will require opening case)?
2. Thinkvantage update downloaded?
3. Drivers installed?
4. Hotfix installed (if XP)?
5. Sound buttons doing anything?
6. Did the speakers ever work?
7. When did the speakers stop working?
8. Do headphones provide sound when plugged in?
1. Speakers connected to mobo (will require opening case)? Yes they are connected.
2. Thinkvantage update downloaded? yes I did it a couple of times, the only thing it really updated was adobe reader or 1 of those kinda things
3. Drivers installed? I've installed those drivers again and again, the 2 that the other person said to also
4. Hotfix installed (if XP)? I need to know how to do hotfix, I've never heard of it
5. Sound buttons doing anything? When I press the up or down volume button, it lights up green, BUT no sound comes from it, unless I press too many buttons, then I get that error chirp.
6. Did the speakers ever work? yes they did, worked perfectly fine
7. When did the speakers stop working? Over the summer of 2007 I had a computer pro add vista to the laptop, everything worked fine, but I got tired of Vista not wanting to connect to any networks, SO I had him install XP back on here, and he tried all of this stuff already too, now I'm just trying to find the fix myself, which is why I'm asking for help, bc I know a little about computers, but nowhere near enough.
8. Do headphones provide sound when plugged in? Headphones were plugged in and nothing came thru, :(
Thanks for everyones help, I'm not ignoring what y'all say, I'm just doing what I can comprehend to do, anything I'm missing I need help on, which is why I came here, :) Especially with the hotfix, never heard of it
a hotfix is an update provided by microsoft fix various flaws in the OS and hardware etc... you can get them here
http://www.update.microsoft.com/micr....aspx?ln=en-us
Ok, now we're getting somewhere --
First, uninstall any drivers you already have for sound.
Then go to www.ibm.com, then support and downloads. You're going to have to run a search from there. What you want is
Audio Features XI for Windows XP -- make sure it lists T60 as one of the models. That's the correct driver you want. 77a224ww.exe is the download name.
Then do a search for and download
Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) High Definition Audio class driver (Q888111) for Windows XP with Service Pack 2 -- I'm assuming you have XP up to SP2.
Install both of those, reboot -- You should be back in business. "Should" as in this is a T60 and prone to headaches of sound problems, but probability's pretty good here this'll do the trick for you.
Sounds good, but the computer guy told me he as already done this, but I'm willing to give it a shot, how do I uninstall drivers?
OK, I went to device manager. I see Legacy audio drivers, is that what I'm looking for, and if so, I uninstall it, bc I only see 1. and what about audio codecs? I clicked audio driver and it says it's working properly. just a little fyi.
FYI, we tend to hate that "computer guy" term. :eek:Quote:
the computer guy told me he as already done this
He may have already done it, but I'd almost lay you money he either downloaded the wrong one or did it in the wrong order -- only saying this because that's what I did.
So the idea here is to start fresh from scratch with drivers we know beyond a doubt are the ones you need.
So just go into your Control Panel and Add/Remove programs, look for anything related to T60 audio. Nix it.
Also right-click "My Computer" and go into Device Manager. Look for anything audio, and uninstall it.
After that's done, download and install what I listed above, cross your fingers...and let's see what happens.
Good luck!
hey I have to run to a closing,I am in real esate, so when I get back I can continue, thank you for your help, I'll change the terminology for him, lol, we'll call him PC PRO, :) tty n a little while, thanks again, be back about 4 check back then thank you soo much!
I don't believe those two are related to what we're working on. I remember them being there on mine and I never messed with them, so I'd say don't bother with them.Quote:

That tells me more though -- That means there are no T60 audio drivers installed, which means your tech didn't download and install the right driver or didn't do it properly, but as I noted, with this particular laptop that's an easy mistake to make.
Ok, I'm back, now where was I, lol
Then which driver do I install? I did like 3 or 4 already...does anyone have yahoo messenger or AIM that can help me thru this?
I just installed the adi soundmax driver, i'm gonna shut down and when I turn it back on i hope it works, :)
Of course, it didn't work, :( so anymore suggestions, please feel free to run them by me. I am getting frustrated, :(
Hi there potter~,
If you haven't found a solution please have a look at this for me:
When you boot up you will get some sort of IBM/Lenovo screen I expect? Then you should briefly see an option to go into "setup" or "BIOS" or something. F2, Esc, Delete or something?
Try that and have a look at all the BIOS options.
Hopefully there will be some setting that relates to sound. Enable "onboard sound" or whatever? Just make a note of them and what they are set at....if they are "off" then activate them.
Now go into Windows............. in the Control Panel there should be something like "Sounds & Multimedia Properties" With a sub-option of "Audio" that displays "Preferred Devices". Make sure that those settings match what you actually have.
Sorry I cannot be more precise right now, as I have been working Windows 2000 and Vista since Christmas.
I will try to get an XP box online later today (Saturday) ;)
EDIT:
XP box now up and running :D
It is "Sounds & Audio Devices" and you need to look at "Audio", "Voice" and "Hardware"
Ok, so I've done everything, I found a million places to download that 8881111 file and I did it and i restarted my computer, it didn't work, I also, shut it and restarted and looked for F2, it never says to hit that, it does say to hit the thinkvantage button tho. and I did and it was stuff like system restore...is there anyone I could mail my laptop to that could help, :(
Sorry, with the T60 you need to hit the F1 key as soon as the Thinkpad Logo is displayed and that will take you into BIOS setup.
In Windows XP "Sounds & Audio Devices" <Audio> what does it say the "Sound Playback Default Device" is?
Something like Intel AD1981 (possibly 1984?) HD Audio 1.0?
Also, whilst you are there, go into "Advanced Audio Properties" <Speaker Setup> and make sure that you have one of the laptop options selected.
Finally, go into <Hardware>, select each item one by one and click on the "Properties" radio button. Look to see if any of them are reported as having problems.
This is his friend posting, Now its appears we have gotten the sound to work, but now the computer will not boot... getting the blue screen...
when booting in diagnostic mode if errors during the "IBM active protection" step I believe...
any ideas?
-Keegan
Hi there Keegan,
1. What actually got the sound to work?
2. Does the blue screen give you a message (you might have to go into BIOS and turn off the restart on error option).
Can you get into "diagnostic" or "safe" mode and look at the event logs?........ if so, what messages are there?
Johnno :)
Sorry I didn't jump on this thread sooner, I just glanced at the title, and assumed that it was AK's thread from a month or two ago. Quick question... Is your XP install from one of IBMs recovery cds, or is it a retail version? Even though you are out of warranty, you can purchase a recovery cd from IBM for $45 + S&H ... this will have all of the drivers you need. and if that blue screen is related to a software issue, which I am thinking that it is, the reimaging will fix that too... if you need the cds, just call 800.ibm.serv [800.426.7378] press 1, 1, enter your machine type, and press 1 again. Give the agent the MT and S/N... and when they tell you it is oow, just tell them that you need to purchase RCDs... if you can get it going without these, great! ... but if you really get stuck, you might consider this option. Now if you are running one of IBM's images from a Rec CD, that device should in theory be PnP... so you should just be able to remove the device from dev man, reboot, and the correct driver will be loaded, after the device is detected. Just had a call like that Saturday...
I can't seem to get into either a safe, or diagnostic mode... the blue screen flashes off way faster than i can even read the first line....Quote:

Try booting into a Windows Live disk and see if you can pull up event logs there...just make sure BIOS is set to boot into the CD drive first.
0x0000007b (0xBACCF524, 0xc0000034, 0x00000000,0x00000000)
the blue screen message....
Was that after changing boot order?
If so, restore boot order in BIOS to default, then press F12 at the very first Thinkpad bootup screen and select your device that way.
scratch that, its booting fine again, but no sound... says there is no audio device present...

Dang, I wish I could remember exactly where it is.
It's in BIOS somewhere though, I'm sure of it. I ran into this same issue on yet another T60. I think it reads something like "system audio" give or take a word or two. You want it enabled.
Go through all settings in BIOS...it's in there somewhere.
You said sound came back after resetting BIOS to default? That had to be the setting default reset earlier.
under the device manager--->system devices--->System Speaker, has no driver installed... could this be the problem?
I can't find anything at all related to the word audio under any of the BIOS MENUS
Main menu shows:
-Config
-Date/Time
-Security
-Startup
-Restart
-HDD Diagnostic program
I am pretty sure I have checked every sub menu I could...
