Ping

Hello,
IM Mike and im new to Windows, I was wondering is there an app that can send a ping from a laptop with xp home to a local router and if not what is a good app i can download.
I would appreciate any help

Well there is a couple things you can do, if you looking for a quick test you can use the simple ping built into windows, or if your looking for continuous monitoring and something that will notify you if the host is down you might want to look into Nagios

Well, you did specify an application rather than the command line, so you might look at this:

I am afraid that it is rather old, and hasn't been maintained for a while, but it is a collection of common network tools under a GUI/application?

LIke i said I'm very new to windows and know nothing about command lines. and how do i use the built in ping? but i will look into those sites thank you

Start -> Run and type in cmd and than the command is "ping 127.0.0.1" (replace IP with your routers IP (192.168.0.1?) and youll get some like this

C:\Documents and Settings\BlazyOne>ping 192.168.0.1

Pinging 192.168.0.1 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 192.168.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64

You can google this stuff easier than asking us to hand you the answers.

mazumbaugh, just curious, if you are completely new to windows, what have you been using? I would assume no *nix flavors if you know nothing of CLI. Even most of the fellow mac users I know do some stuff on the command line periodically.

On the router address, do you mean its external IP address or its address inside the network?

in cmd

ipconfig will output information
Default Gateway is your router

actually the extent of my knowledge on a windows machine is Ms word and accessing a floppy drive lol and yes i'm a mac addict but you dont need to know any thing about command line to run a mac heck i dont even know how to get to the command line prompt on my mac cause ive never had to use it

and yes its a in building network but im trying to access my dads router so i can get stuff off his computer to mine and i already have the wan ip for his i just dont know how to get out of the schools network and i was hopeing getting into the schools router would help

Well, if you are connecting to the internet you must do? perhaps you just haven't thought of it that way?

Once again, if you are connecting to the School network and the internet, you already are ;)

I think that you need to look at this from a "top down" approach? First you have to make sure that both machines are set up to support remote access and filesharing. Until you do that nothing is going to happen anyway, so there is no need for troubleshooting.
