win2003 event error
Hello im having some error on system event. There is a warning that says
Source: aac
Category: None
EventID: 4079
Descrition:
\Device\Scsi\aac1: PrintfToHost: String to large
In other description
\device\Scsi\aac1: ID(0:02:0); Recoverd Error [k:0x1,c:0x17,q0x3)
I belive im having some kind of problem on my raid.
I have a HP Proliant Ml150 server, with 4 SCSI 72GB Raid 5.
I have checked the light of the drivers on the server, and they are all green, so i think the drivers are ok, but there must be something wrong with the raid.
Does anyone had this problem? What was the solution?
Know a good RAID test tool?
Thanks

i have already checked that eventID but the problem is that the description doesn't match and its for windows 2000 and not windows 2003 server.
Thanks for the reply.

Dell has tools for its RAID....so I am guessing so does HP???
I recently had a disk fail and it showed up on boot..as the bios was loading the RAID controller.
The dell tool is installed in windows and monitors all the hardware.

well i thought that but im not using the HP Raid controller and add extra one that would support Raid 5. The Hp Raid controller on board doesn't support Raid 5 :(
Is there a diagnostic raid tool? Im still trying to find what is the cause of the error, i belive there's something to do with the raid.
I have rebooted but without errors in raid, so im kind of confused know :s
-
I suggest then checking with the vendor of the raid controller.

Already check it, only drivers firmware available , no tools for raid :(

Here is something i found:
http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?e...faport&phase=1
Says it could be high usage ... or power issues . I do have here a UPS compensating all the time the power.
Will try to check this out.
But if anyone have other ideas, please share.
Thanks

What is on the drive....users folders???
May be a synchronization issue as suggested.
Are you using Windows RAID configuration through the disk management utility ?
Or is it hardware RAID?? There must be some utilty before the OS boots that is used to configure the RAID before the OS boots.
Also ...how often does this error occur???

Sorry for the last post, i had a problem with the keyboard.
Like i said i really do have a problem with RAID. I have a drive broken.
What is the best procedure for a RAID-5 restore? I can't restore with windows, because the RAID is not controlled by windows, and im not very familiar with LSI firmware. I will try today to restore, but if you guys could point me in some direction or some ideas in advanced i would appreciated,
Thanks.
Best Regards

Just replace the drive....thats what RAID is.....no restoring.
I recently replaced a drive....while my server was running.......very cool.
all depends on your controller.
MLF
-
I have already replaced, but the controller says the Raid 5 is degraded
im not sure that the drive is still working, and unfortunitly i don't have a new drive with the same size to check it :(.
What can i perform on this drive that could make it work ... if it still works.
But if i check the option. Create Array, the drive is there, and i can creat a seperated array
-
You already replaced the drive...but you dont have a drive the same size to test??
Sorry...but I am very confused
Have you read the manual for your controller???
With the dell I just replaced the drive with a drive that was bigger then the failed drive...and spun at 15000 like the rest of SAS.
I didnt even have to restart....maybe you should try that.
The dell utility recognized it...and rebuilt it. Its been online ever since

sorry for the confusion. I was going to replace the drive with a drive i had in my office, but when i was getting ready to replace i realised that the drive is not the same size, it's less.
I don't windows utility, windows can't even see that i have 4 drives doing RAID 5, i just have the adapted bios, and im still trying to figure it out, how to add a new drive to the RAID.
I belive is just activating, and the controller will build the array, but i just want to make sure everthing is covered and that it goes smooth, i don't want to lose data.
Thanks for the reply
-
You should be able to just add it to the controller and it will rebuild.
You should always have another mode of back up too...removable off site and not just rely on RAID for data.
What would happen if I stole your server....How would you recover?

All the sensitive data i have on tapes, there is no problem there, but i don't want to reinstall the O.S again :( , and i can't seem to be able to backup the Active Directory, for some reason it always fails to back it up. Maybe because of the damaged drive. i will try again today
-
Disaster :( . I couln't rebuild the Array, maybe i done something wrong dunno. I have to install the win server again. Is there i way that i can use the local account in the workstations with the new server installation?
What i mean is that, every user have email, personalized desktop, Internet favorites, and if i turn them out and back again into the domain the local workstation will create another account, and i will have to import everything from the other local account, and there are lots of users, so i would take a very long time to put everything correct again.
-
As an admin of the machine you will see the old profile in the Documents and Settings folder.
You and copy the desktop items and favorites over.
Too bad about the array???
MLF
-
That's exactly what i didn't wanted to do, i didn't wanted to copy from one account to another, i would like to use the same one.
-
well good luck with that...

I am afraid I don't understand this
With RAID 5 you can afford to lose one drive. The controller should detect this and tell you about it. This is what I think the "degraded array" message is about...........it is telling you that you no longer have RAID protection so if you lose another drive you are screwed?
If you replace the defective drive with one of the same size and speed, the controller firmware should prompt to rebuild the array.
Did you install the smaller drive anyway, or did you get one the same size or larger?
As MLF has mentioned, with a modern controller you should be able to replace the drive whilst the array is still running ("hot swapping"), and it will rebuild itself seamlessly.
Do you know if you have a hardware raid controller or is it software  Personally, I wouldn't even look at a software controller for anything other than a non-critical SOHO environment running RAID1. In case anyone is wondering about RAID 0, there is no such beast IMO. The "R" stands for "redundant" and RAID 0 has no redundancy, does it?
Good luck :)
-
I am with you there Nihil as I do not understand the need for a reinstall because the array has "degraded"
Unless there are other issues\errors???
I still dont understand the setup...and have no idea of the hardware ...so thats about it I guess.

Yes, some more information is certainly required.
I would have thought it was pretty much standard practice to test a RAID array before commissioning it as a production system? If we assume that it wasn't actually tested as part of the commissioning process:
I guess that leaves us with three basic alternatives?
1. The RAID system was never set up properly in the first place?
2. The hardware/firmware/software was defective from the outset?
3. Something or someone took it down, either deliberately or inadvertently?
I can't see any event that would damage the controller and only take out one drive of 4..................mind you, apart from the odd case of losing too many drives I have only ever seen one instance of a RAID 5 that wouldn't rebuild, and that was reason #2 above.
Can you shed any light on this, as you obviously have had far more experience in this area than myself?

Im having this problem now. On the workstations "The group policy client-side extension security failed to execute"
Im having some sort of problem on delivering the group policy's trough the domain. Any thoughts?
-
Is this after you have reinstalled the server.....if the answer is yes you have to rejoin the workstations to the domain.
MLF
-
yes i already have rejoined the workstations, it should be working, but for some reason the GPO is not being applied to the workstations :s.
Dns is correctly configured, and the active directory.
Not sure what is happening.

Not sure of your setup so unsure if this even applies....hotfix needed.
