CISSP and CISM certification..

Hey,

I gave my SSCP exam last month and now I’m planning for Associate of CISSP on 4th of April and then CISM on 13th June..

I need some "pointers" on how to go about it.. I've got CISSP book from Shon Harris and Official ISC2 text book too. However there is no relevant material that I found (except Q and A books on isaca's site) to study for CISM exam.. How do I go about studying for CISM ?

Whatever tips you guys have please let it flow.. I just want in general ways to go about studying for these 2 exams’.. Except study 2 hours a day one.. :p

When I did my CISSP, I went there to learn and do some test questions. Helped lots. (they have questions for CISSP and CISM)

When I studied for CISSP, I focused allot on doing practice exam questions because the folks at ISC2 have an interesting way of phrasing those questions. In my experience the questions on the CD that comes with the "official" text book are the closest to the real thing but I also managed to get my hands on questions from a number of other books/sources and found those equally as valuable (including Shon Harris ones which were some of the more difficult ones)

Hey.. I just want to know one more thing.. Passing the CISSP.. How much does that benefit.. Since I only have 2 years of work experience will passing CISSP give me the same boost as passing it after 5 years of work experience.. Logically it should give me more but I just want to know from an employers point of view.. Would he / she value my ASSOCIATE OF CISSP as much as a CISSP.. ?

Do you have a college degree?

It should help in regards to positions with security management requirements. This is one of those certifications that matter because of the nature, reputation and difficultness of the cert itself. (IMO -- YMMV).

Yeah.. But I have a Bachelors in commerce.. :( .. Its sort of a let down.. however I wish to make it up with CISSP and CISM ..

I'm going for MBA next year in IT and Systems.. however before I do, I want to earn my way through it too..

Depends on your knowledge and your ability to study. Life distracted me when I was studying so it took about a year and half to get it all down pat (e.g., job switching, creating courses, etc.)

Hey .. I'm scheduled for CISSP on 21st march.. I got my SSCP cert :)..

I just have one question.. although its different from the title of the thread..

I'm already a SSCP and Ill hopefully be CISSP associate of ISC2 in a month..

I want to know if its better to do CISA or CISM.. ?

I went through few surveys and I did not see CISM featured anywhere.. I just saw CISA.. I was wondering after doing CISSP is it better to get CISA or CISM ? I've already registered for CISM but I can change for CISA if I want before April 12th.

I'm sure you'll get it the 2nd time around. :) Just read the questions carefully and bring a highlighter to highlight the important questions (e.g., identify the double-negatives and such -- sometimes it's a question of misreading a question that gets a wrong answer, not that we don't know the answer).

You wont believe .. There was this question about what background check will you carry out before hiring an employee

Options were so simple :

His children education
Medical
(something weird but not connected)
Criminal history.

When rechecking my answers I had ticked MEDICAL AND IT WAS AT THAT POINT OF TIME I REALIZED THAT I MUST HAVE GOOFED UP A LOT ! It was too late though.. Couldnt think a thing by end of the paper.. I travelled 26 hours (trains - yeah they're slow) to reach to the exam ..

Anyway.. Thy Shall PAsS .. :)

I think that you encountered one of the downsides of multiple choice elements in an examination regime?

At least when you have to submit written replies and calculations you are in charge.

With MCQs you have to interpret what the expected answer is?

These are the only exams which I’ve developed respect towards. I don't see a single question out of the book. It's conceptual and it's amazing.. its one of those exams you can never pass out of slogging or mugging a book.. you honestly have to understand the topic before you can pass the exam.

You never stop learning. Trust me on this. I haven't done the CISA so have no advice other than good luck.

I still remember tiger saying something really good about education and how it is very imporatant.. you were a part of that thread too.. i see how life has so changed in few years only..

Well, it will help some but the reality is, when it comes to getting a job it's how you market yourself to them that will matter in the end. The certs will get you into the door, the rest is up to you and your resume.

Hmmm true.. I'm lined up for CISM and GIAC (forensics and Incident handler) this year.. :D

Well i really wish .. I could say "party" but the time is still not there..

CISM in December (i am going to sign up tomorrow i guess, but I've gone through the reference material couple of times [which is a first, studying anywhere more than 10 days before the exam]) :shocked: :shocked:

GCIH next month i guess

GIAC - Gold after that (before December)

MBA next year (Not sure about this one because i want to be in Information Systems Security area and MBA is not a "requisite" here, to my knowledge")

CISSP - ISSAP and ISSEP after that


I say again i really wish I could say "party" and go out with friends for JUST ONE DAY..

btw, party for me isn't going to disc or something (:shocked: as you may be i have never been to a disc in 23 years on this planet)

Party would be couple of friends and an open road on four wheels.. Drinks may join us ;)

PS : I don't drink. I used to for 2 - 3 months but i quit.
