The family of the mathematician who coined the word "googol" may be threatening to take Google.com to court over the name, according to an article in Wednesday's edition of The Scotsman.
Professor Edward Kasner, a mathematician at Columbia University, used the term "googol" in his 1940 book, Mathematics and the Imagination to mean 10 raised to the 100th power. According to mathematical lore, he got the word from his 9-year-old nephew. His great-neice, Peri Fleisher, is seriously looking at asserting the family's legal rights, according to the article. In an interview by the Baltimore Sun, Fleisher is described as "a compensation specialist for a Silicon Valley firm".
Legal experts consulted by The Scotsman asserted that it would be difficult to prove the family had any legitimate claim to use of the word, unless they had been using it as a trademark or somehow that Google.com had been misusing the term for their own benefit.
