In general, if you can think of a processor, linux probably runs on it, it's quite a versatile OS.
I do remember there being an issue with RedHat 6.2 whereby it would incorrectly ID the Athlon as a P3, and attempt to get the CPU's serial number (there isn't one on an Athlon). It's an easy fix, so if you need help with getting it up and running, lemme know.
