Just wondering how many port numbers we have?
65553 if i remember right
65535 TCP
65535 UDP
???????
There are 65535. Up to like 1028 are the commonly used ports and up to 40000 something are the ports that some applications will use usually, beyond that are private ports with seldom use.
65535 TCP ports and
65535 UDP ports
There are both TCP and UDP ports. So when you do something like a port scan to see what open ports you have open you need to scan both TCP and UDP ports. Some scanners do it by default and some you have to tell.
wow..thanks for the info
Can one port be both TCP and UDP?
Yes, no, sort of.
TCP and UDP just signify the protocol being used by whatever service/daemon is running on the port. There is no reason that either couldn't be used on a port, but as I understand it a service/daemon can only use one at a time. A normal service/daemon, that is (FTP, sendmail, whatever). I think you could write a service/daemon that would use both, I don't know if any currently do though. I'm sleepy. I'm going to bed.
Good night everybody... I hope this made sense, I'll read it in the morning and fix it.
