if you had to choose?

well am developing new site atm - got a lil done but no-where near finished.....but was just surfing round today and saw a couple of different link exchange kinda thingys and am thinking i might use one to increase traffic once site is running.

so my question is which (if you had to choose) would you rather have on a page....a banner ad for another site or a pop-under?

reason i ask is that saw two that seemed promising - one you design your own banner and then is displayed on a 1:1 basis - eg someone elses banner is displayed on your site (choosen at random) yours is then shown on a different persons.

the pop-under works on a points basis - for everytime someone elses site opens as a pop-under you recieve 5points and everytime you get 10 points your site is displayed as a pop-under on someone elses site so is like a 2:1 basis (but you get 1000 points for registering)

both methods DO NOT allow warez/porn/etc sites to join so no problems with content that maybe displayed in association with my site - and you can choose the catagories of sites which are displayed.

well any thoughts? or any other ways of generating traffic you can think off??

I would go with with banner add. Cause eventually, your gonna run out of points with the pop under.

Personally I would think that a banner would be more effective, what with so many people having the ability to stop popups now. Netscape 7.1 blocks popups now quite effectively, and I think IE has something similar. I use Netscape 7.1 and don't see any popups. I think the banner would get better result simply because it would be seen more.

And in my opinion, popups are a hell of a lot more annoying, too.

I agree with the two posts above about the banner. And I recommend that you also place a link in your sig here. You could put your banner in your sig also and have it link to your site. That should get you some traffic.

yeah i normally do have a link in my sig but aint got the site up atm - will do once is completed tho :)

i dunno i hate the way banners ruin the look of a site - but then again i dont like pop-ups (doesn't really matter to me i never see pop-ups or banners) hmmm have to give it some thought

Yeah you do have a point, that banners do ruin the look of a site.

Thats just my opinion though. In the end its what you want.

The pop under actually opens your site. That means that you are not increasing traffic, you are just using bandwidth. On the few occassions that a popup actually shows up, I just close it, and most other people do too. So all you would be doing is driving false traffic to your site that would be pulling down ann your info, and then they would just close it wihtout seeing it anyway. So its just a waste of bandwidth.

Use a banner and find a way to place it properly without ruining your site. Put it at the bottom or something, so it doesn't interfer with the content. Just make sure you have a well designed banner for your site.

Banner, especially when you consider how many people have pop up stoppers.
