Judge Says Microsoft Must Give States Windows Code

I'm ripping this straight from Slashdot.org - wouldn't this to good to be true? :)

yeah I read this. We'll see if the appeal process goes for them again. Ms keeps on delaying things with endless appeals.

U can't force ppl to open up their code.. It's their code and thus their choice... If the court orders M$ to open up their code because of the antitrust thing then we wont even notice it... We wont see any of the code (unless some1 pays some corrupted judge for giving a copy of it..)

I would love to see the code for windoze (so porting programs to linux will become easier) but it's kinda ok that the code isn't open.. that way linux is sure to win in the long run... open source develops faster.... hmmm, I got a little sidetracked here... peace!

It's the same principle that a food Co.
must list the ingredients on a package of food.
The product remains theirs, they just have
to reveal what's inside.

I think they really have nothing to lose by
publishing the source code. It would still be
illegal to pirate the software.
They would still sell as many copies as before,
and they could charge for copies of the source
code too.

Maybe some people would change their attitude
toward Microsoft, once they saw the code.

A little off topic here but its M$ and I cant help myself.

Seems like everytime you here about microsoft it's about another hole in thier code.
When is the public going to wake up and start makeing them (M$) accountable for thier
sloppy code practices.If microsoft somehow manages to win this fight with getting rid of
full-disclosure they wont even have to fix thier holes or they can take as long as they want to
make a so-called "patch".I bet if it were linux that had the problems with thier servers getting hacked
into by everyone and the opensource community tried to get rid of full-disclosure,microsoft would then say that full-disclosure is great.The point is that microsoft only does whats benificial to themselves and noone else,they dont even care about the public that buys thier shitty software.
People really need to wake up and feel the pain in thier ass,that's microsoft ****ing you.

A few perspective-notes:

Basically, Microsoft must open up their code to selected specialists, IF they want to be able to prove their assertion that it is not possible to divorce certain bundled-antitrust-problematic items (I.E.: I.E.) (That looks so funny) from the OS. If they decide to abandon that assertion, then they might wiggle out of needing to show the source to specialists.

That, and Microsoft does not have a monopoly on bugs. (Heh) There are bugs in other third-party software packages not made by microsoft, as well as OS bugs in other systems. To some extent Microsoft gets a bit of an extra bad reputation because their vulnerabilities are more publicized. (Just pointing out that although it's worse than some other systems\services, it's not as bad as you might be lead to think.)

My main piss-off at them is the lack of control I have over my system, in terms of being able to tell it NOT to launch messenger when I log into hotmail, for instance.
