computer can be slow that deppends on that got some problem in RAM.
try to log on in failsafe mode and look if computer is still slow. if so you will need to test RAM.

I tested RV042 Linksys with no luck
and BEFVP41 Linksys and was not working.....

Sometimes it is possible go other way, if you finding msconfig.exe then you can rename to msconfig.com or msconfig.a.com
Works just if msconfig.exe is blocking by it's name.

Try to not use build in microsoft software, such as IE, WMP,OutLook.
To not overload you computer you can also try some router(or *dsl modem) with build in AV and FireWall
