I think you can still use a w98 boot disk and manipulate your me (fat32) partitions with same tools as you would in 98, as long as command.com is loaded into memory to interpret your commands. People seem to be confusing dos - ms dos or microsoft disk operating system (which, incidentally was called qdos or quick and dirty operating system when ms purchased it all those years back) , with the dos prompt - a command interpreter, which you can still use in me. The changes in me were in the way applications accessed memory - with things like video being routed through direct x rather than having direct access to the system memory, and other bits of hardware having to go through the new windows driver model. Admittedly, errors writing to memory could adversley affect your whole system but when it isn't crashing your pc, it does give a performance boost.

While i'm on the subject, i should also add that the same goes for linux, the idea of taking away the "console"or a command line interface, will, i believe, never happen, as long as the kernel remains posix compliant, you should still be able to boot the machine and use any compatible shell to access your partitions - heck, you can even use the perl interpreter to interface with linux, as long as you know enough about the perl language that is!

Win ME = Win 98 with a bunch of **** loaded onto it with no DOS. At the shop I work at the customers get 98SE when we new build/re-build their system. I personally liked havving the direct command line editor. Also, Win ME shouldn't tell me what I can and can't install, it can go to hell, I'll load whatever the hell I want.

    DOS

Many of my little problems have been sorted through DOS and Ive written tutorials on DOS at various points of my life. It uses to the new user are null, to the old fashioned it is very useful thing indeed.

I will agree there are a few things in DOS that were helpful, but to each his own.

What I get pissed about is the fact MS charges a forune to even upgrade. At least Apple only charges $19.95 for an upgrade with CD. Is what MS is selling worth a life savings, every other year?

At the risk of being a loner I have to say that for what I use it for (DivX, Studio Max, Games) Windows aint that bad. It's no unix nor linux and I still have my whole network running the good old penguin product.
But I like to have the odd box running windows and Win Me wasn't too bad cause it was fast. The fact that you couldn't push it to hard without getting a blue screen was an issue but eh.
I do like win Xp though seems to be as fast and more stable.

Sorry legacyboy, but nothing is more annoying than people posting spurrious information, windows me is NOT the bastard child of w2k, the two are quite very different - with win me using a similar kernel to win 98 and w2k being closely linked to the NT kernel.

Windows ME, personally I don't like but I still have it. I have multiple computers at home that run everything from windows 95 to windows me, windows nt, windows 2000 both pro and server, linux, debian on another. I leave them all running all the time. Yeah, the electric bill is high I can say that windows me runs ok for a week then needs a reboot. The 2000 or NT machines need a reboot after a couple of months and the linux machine, hehe what's a reboot?

I do have to agree that Windows ME has better memory management, allowing it to run a few days longer than 98 or 95 before crashing for no reason, LOL.
