Use a firewall!!!
I used nukenabber for a while(late98 to late 99) and soon realised that all it does is alert you to attempts and then shuts ports and if you try to look out for too many ports it stops your system from operating correctly..
Who knows if this has been corrected but i found i could knock out a user by shutting down his nukenabber with overloads of attempts

Hi Mike
Just did a search at google.com with the term "nuke nabber"....Took all of 0.17 seconds and found 4740 matches..After puppets place Zdnet seemed to be the most popular download site.
I have to agree with rouge spy and say that Tiny's firewall is far better than nuke nabber. Anyway, it's up to you!

What exactly is your definition of 'proper configuring'?

Yes Znet and the others do list it but they rely on puppets for the download and you get the error then. But I appreciate the effort. I have decided to take what appears to be the general advice of the members here and go with a firewall. Using the Tiny Personal Firewall. Thank You to everyone who took the time to read and especially to those who replied to this post

Well, I've recently had some bad luck with the latest version (which might just be an interaction with my proxy software), but the older version I used before that was pretty good. I think the idea is that it takes a lot more configuration than, say, ZoneAlarm. It's the trade off between flexibility dumbed-down-ness. Tiny can be given all sorts of rulesets regarding local/remote end-points, protocol type, local program, MD5 checksums, trusted hosts list, only valid during a certain time interval...
It requires a lot more knowledge of TCP/IP to use than just a local-application-based firewall, which was what ZA seemed to be. (Las time I used it... a long time ago, actually. I feel old. Heh.)
