"PHP is a server-side, cross-platform, HTML embedded scripting language." - Taken directly from php.net
It is a server side language similar to ASP but it works on *nix as well as windows. It's a pretty nifty web development language. You can do a lot of useful things with php and can connect to databases.
If you plan on doing web design / development for a living, php would be good to know and also increase your value.
