    Talking PC Repair!

Alrighty.. I have this computer here... And I am having a wonderful time with it...

It has an azus motherboard and basically i cant get it to recognize ANY drives.. It is a newer pc running an amd athlon at 1000 mhz.. It does the auto detect thing with the drives.. and it gets nothing... Anyone have any guesses on what it could be?

do you know that the drives you've tried are good?
if so, have you tried (on a different computer of course) to download any bios updates for the board?
if that doesn't work try manually entering the cyc/hds/sec and see if that works.

if that doesn't work your system board is defective.

    Question

Some questions before help can be given:

    - what kind of drives?
    - what kind of controller?
    - onboard? expension card?
    - are there any OSes on the drives?
    - BIOS types and version?

Are you sure the ide cables are the right way round? at the motherboard end and hdd end? there should be a little indentation to prevent this sort of mistake but sometimes there's not. Or could you have the jumper on the drive set to cable select and a cable that doesn't support this?
Failing that - it could be a bum cable - sounds like its something pretty fundamental - check everything is seated firmly and correctly and double check it with an ide cable you know to be working.

Check and see if they are plugged in right
Pin one on hard drives are next to the power connector
and see what they are set at (i.e. Master, slave, cable select)
also check in the bios and make sure that the IDE controllers are not disabled.
if none of that works, like bradleylamer said, your board are defective

    Talking

Hrmm.. Some thoughts (as meager as they are)..

Remove the CDrom and DVD, and try the drive on the other channel (ide 2 instead of 1). Check jumpers. Try replacing the cable. Have you tried the drive in another machine?

If that doesn't work, sounds like the IDE connectors may be defective. The MOBO is not totally shot. You could get an expansion card to by-pass the on-board connectors. Does the board support those kinds of drives (e.g., ATA-66, ATA-100, etc.)?
