Windows XP from a W2K install problem
Hi All;
I just installed XP over a W2k with NTFS
on a Dell Inspiron 5000 laptop...
now the damm think takes 30 mins to boot up...
Ideas.... I hate to have to do a clean install
it means a lot of data back ups...

Can you give more detailed system specs than that? Windows XP takes a lot of resources, which COULD explain the problem. Half an hour seems a bit excessive, though. Try disabling some of the services you're not using (assuming you have the pro edition), and see if that at least helps. If you're running home edition, I'm not aware of any way to turn off services, so you will probably have to try a clean install. If that doesn't work, you should probably go back to your old OS. I really don't think upgrading to XP is a good idea anyway. I wouldn't touch it with a 30' pole. I won't get into the details about that...

More on Slow XP boot
According to the M$ news groups that
some machines do not like DHCP
and this computer has 2 PCMCIA Nics.
One with a static non routable IP 10.0.0.21
the other is DHCP... That may be the biggie..
I'll have to wait till Wed and test my ideals
