it should be set automaticaly, if your hardware is only 10Mbs then that's all you get, if you have a 10/100 hub (or switch) and your NIC supports 10/100 you should get 100Mbs (cable permitting)
In short, you'll get whatever you can support.

Hello scorpion,
What jamie said is correct, in that your cards speed should set automatically, however, some drivers do allow you to change from, say 10base2 to 10baseT - have a look at "man ifconfig" and more specifically the media type section.
