Thread: My phreak box

    My phreak box

I once had a dream to create a phreak box that would be widely known and included in lists of boxes. The closest I got was a malicious combination of two preexisting boxes.
This was long ago, please don't judge me for the maliciousness of this box, I was young and nieve. I post it now for edcationaland novelty purposes ONLY.
Use a beige box to dial a 900 number that charges you by the minute to listen to a recording or sit at a menu.
Then use a scarlet box to tie the line, connect the red and green ports with a piece of wire is all a scarlet box is. Do this while still conected to the 900 number with the beige box. After the scarlet box is in place, remove the beige box and the call will NOT disconect due to the scarlet box. The victim will continue to be billed untill the scarlet box is removed.
I don't know what good this is, but it just intrigued me that a scarlet box can keep a connection going without any phone on the line being off the hook, thats the reason I made this box. I've never used it in the way described above.(dialing a 900 #) and i hope no one does.

And in what country is this box supposed to work? USA?

It should work in the USA, I don't know much about the networks elsewhere.

    Cool

Here in the US, beige boxes work...and though I've never heard of this 'scarlet box", it sounds like it could work *shrug*
Unfortunately, the favorite phreaking tool of the US, the Red Box, has become harder to construct as time has passed, and phone booths have become harder to fool...to the point where you have to physically rewire the actual booths sometimes.
I'll poke around some BBS's and IRC rooms, and see if I can find any info for ya, pak

    Cool

i like the idea...it would be so annoying!

But yeah...its really too bad. Phreaking was so much easier back in the 80s....wahhhhh! Now its really hi risk, especially like where i live. Theres cameras at just about EVERY intersection, so its almost not worth it, unless you wear a mask or have something that makes you look different. Quite the shame.

in the us, red boxes do work, you just have to put a dime in the slot (a mechanical trigger is required to be switched by a a physical coin).... i have a document file with a list of all the phreak boxes on it. i'll try to find it for you if you want it.....

A simple recording made by a simple program can be put on a digital IC recorder and used as a makeshift redbox quite easily. Do redboxes actually work on new phones? I've only been able to find one phone it would work on, and I only succesfully did it once, since then an operator comes on the line everytime i try to make a call, red box or no redbox. Anyways, In reply to grim man, a scarlet box is not really a box, the only piece of hardware required is a piece of wire, it is just the act of jumping the red and green ports to keep the connection open, and I know it works because I called a friend and did it while he stayed on the line, I then hung up all the phones for 30 seconds and picked it back up and the connection was still going. When you connect the ports with the wire, however, the conection throught the phones becomes very weak depending on the quality of the wire, if you use an excelent conductor to jump the ports, you would not be able to hear what was going on if you picked up a phone in the house. This is good if the person picks up the phone while it's connected to some porno 900 number, he wont be able to hear hardly anything. Anyway, once again, the scarlet box and the beige box work in the US, where I live, and the scarlet box used properly will maintain a connection .
A good idea to make a scarlet "box" would be to modify a female-to-female phoneline conector so that it jumps the red and green wires, you could plug it in either between a phone and a jack, or just into a jack with a small line. You could even modify a plug to do the same thing, make the call on a different phone, leave it off the hook, plug the modified plug into another jack in the house and then hang up the phone, the other jack would maintain the connection and it would be very hard to find, even if they did, you could grind it down so it would be nearly impossible to get out!

you could get the same effect by putting a 100 ohm resister accross the line

well, yeah, but what would you rather do, get a 100 Ohm resistor and solder both ends to a wire to connect it to the ports, or get a piece of wire and connect it? Mr. Practical over here.
