    Major advantages:

    [1] Security
    Far more secure than Windows

    [2] Stability
    Far more stable than Windows

    [3] Speed
Faster than Windows (On the same computer)

    [4] Experience
UNIX/Linux Sys Admins are worth more than Windows ones 'cause they're harder to find

    [5] Cost
Linux and most of the software you can run on it is *free*.

Hope this helps... There are millions of advantages, those are the main ones in my opinion.

    Hi

    1) Lack of effective viruses/worms for Linux

    2) More stable than Windows

    3) More configurable than Windows (if you like knowing what makes your system tick, Linux is the way to go)

    4) Two words... Free Compilers!

    5) X windows looks better

    6) Game support is getting better each day.

    7) Office Utilities get better each day (and tend to be less bloated than MS-Office)

    8) Wide variety of file system support (even NTFS is getting to be okay)

    9) Abundant Tech support (many forums on the web, Newsgroups, mailing lists, etc.)

There are many more but this is just to get you started.

    Happy Hacking

    Ok

I agree with all of the advantages posted by Rewandytha only not on the speed issue.

Usually Linux is fast, stable, secure, nice looking, original, cool, in short: Linux rulez

but I have a Linux box (testing RedHat 7.2) wich performs very very very slow in Gnome. Why??????
maybe I made some config mistakes, however I couldn't believe a Linux box could ever get *that* slow.

(So Rewandytha help me out to get it as fast as the other Linux boxes in my surrounding or you have to admit that Linux isn't always faster)

    [6] Network support
Linux can connect to just about any network capable OS, most filesystems and network protocols etc.

    I forgot that one before!
