urgent help needed.....

hello friends....
i have a problem.....in my office...PC i am using WIN98 as os but the rule is that if any machine is not working
then anybody can use your computer and keeping boot passwords are not allowed.
now the person who uses your computer is likely to see what is there on your disk or in the folders.

so can anybody pls tell me if we can lock any folder in WIN98 with password or any ascii character oranything
so that others cannot open it

use PGP to either encrypt individual files or create a PGP Disk to store your personal stuff.

If the amount of data you want to hide from other users is small (so, if we're talking textfiles, this won't be any good for your collection of porn) you could compress the data in a zipfile which you encode with a password. That way, people don't have direct access to the data.

zip files are *fairly* easy to crack, but if the resulting file is below 1.4Mb then move it to a floppy and keep the floppy with you.
PGP is a lot more secure and versitile.

Yeah, you're right, but the average user has some kind of zip on his desktop. Also, if you tell an average user to crack zip, he/she thinks you're on some kind of drug :) Depends a little on the situation.

While zip is easy to crack, I suggest you use PGP, unless you know that the other users are average (or less) users. Then it doesn't care what kind of passwd protection you use.

Otherwise: PGP or do you have CD R/W or ZIP100 or 250 on that box? use it as an extra disk for your private files.

Hi Intruder!

Good day to you! Aside from the suggested ways given above in locking your files/folders. You may also want at the same time to hide your doc or folder in a drive by changing the attributes into hidden. No one will see your file/folder unless they disable the hide hidden files option in your pc.

there are a few options for your users...you can use PGP like others have said, or you could try out scramdisk, which is much like PGP for desktop/file encryption. the files can be password protected for access and encrypted with any of the popular, strong methods.....3DES, blowfish..just to name a few. or there are other lesser programs like magic folders.......

Back in the day, they made these 3 1/4 inch pieces of platic with a magnetic circle in the middle. They were called floppy disks.

I would personally recomend investing in a few. That way, you have access to your files no matter which machine you are using. Also, you can stick them in your pocket, so you don't have to worry about someone else seeing your information. Unless ofcourse you get searched at your company.
