Linux Mandrake 8.1 with a usb dsl modem???
I waited to get linux due to the winmodem in my pc which is incompatible i have read so i wait until i get dsl and bingo i go and buy linux. Turns out the manual says dsl modems will work but not usb modems wtf? Is there anything i can do to get on the internet with linux when all i have is a 56 winmodem and or a usb dsl modem? thanks for any replies.

You could write a USB driver for Linux. Probably a great learning experience. or swap out your winmodem for a traditional modem.

im not that great of a programming im still new so the driver is out, about the winmodem that is dial up anyway. I have dsl and am about to give it up for linux. I really want to use linux but i cant be without the internet so if anyone knows if you can use a usb modem with linux please let me know. thanks

Linux Mandrake 8.1 should have USB support?? It won't find stuff automatically though I don't think, you still have to tell it where to look (each USB device will be given a name in /dev).
