MandrakeSoft has also released Mandrake Linux 8.1 for the itanium processors.

Known for courting newbies, Mandrake Linux has done an about-face by courting high-end users with the Dec. 3, 2001, release of its port of Mandrake Linux 8.1 for the Intel IA64 (Itanium) architecture.

This new 64-bit architecture is Intel's answer to the Alpha and SPARC architectures. It is designed for servers and high-end business software that demands high performance such as large databases and enterprise applications.

Mandrake Linux 8.1 for IA64 has been fully tested against numerous HP, IBM, and Bull systems for maximum compatibility, according to the company's launch press release .

The new version offers the same features as Mandrake Linux 8.1 with IA64 optimizations. It comes with the 2.4.8 Linux kernel with support for the ext3, ReiserFS, and XFS journaling file systems. It also includes GNOME 1.4.1 and KDE 2.2.1 for the desktop users, as well as a full 64-bit-enabled Java Virtual Machine.

Currently, there are only a small number of Linux distributions available for the Itanium, including both SuSE and Red Hat.
