Microsoft Windows Update Site is Slow!!
Anyone notice how slow the Product Update site is via Microsoft is ??
I cannot get any better speed than about 4k on either my ADSL or the T3 I have access to ... I bet they have a DDOS going on because of the TV news and to many users trying to get the patchs at the same time...

Greetings:
You're right, about 4k speeds. Incredibly annoying.....
Not sure if it's a ddos, or just the 7 million people that recently bought xp, and are just now realizing they're wide open to the world thanks to microsoft's latest "security computing environment".
Urgh.........

There are 3 versions of XP at this time, 2 I consider SPYWARE!!!
Version 1
XP Home, Requires MS online Reg. to work after 30 days
SPYWARE
Version 2
XP Pro, Requires MS online Reg. to work after 30 days
SPYWARE
version 3
XP Corp. Same as XP Pro, NO MS REG. REQUIRE!
No SPYWARE!!
Will work on more than 1 machine.
Also XP Pro/Corp has NetBoui on the CD
Better networking and some more goodies.
XP Pro I notice is faster than Home on the same machine,
and is a tiny bit faster than 2000 but not worth the effort
to upgrade a 2000 Pro box to XP
XP will run on Fat32 and NTFS with no problem
understand that Fat32 has less security (grin!)
Do Not Convert to NTFS until you are satified
with the results, You can convert back to your old OS in 15 mins.
XP stores your old OS in a BIG file until del via the control panel.
I still wish the upgrade took 15 mins. ....
You may need the Patch from MS to fix a boot up problem
It is called BootVis.exe and can be found at
http://www.bagpipes.net/files/xp-utilities/
BootVis_File.exe is the orginal compressed MS file.
PS: AINT I A STINKER!!!
I use my iMac to post to this group!!!
and talking about M$ OS's

Not only is the site slow but the latest critical update patch wont install for me. No problem downloading it (other than it takes forever) but it just wont install..
It's the same thing for one of the winmodems I run. The patch downloads easily enough but it just wont install. It even asks if I'd "like to remove this device"

I did post that update patch that MS is trying to get out
it is called Q315000_WXP_SP1_x86_ENU.EXE
and it is located at
www.bagpipes.net/files/xp-utilities/
I also have the 98 and ME available
314757USAM.EXE for ME
314941USA8.EXE for 98
at
www.bagpipes.net/files/
all files are dated 23-Dec-2001
I hope this helps
I am thinking on adding a area just for patches from MS
for XP, It would be manual downloads not auto.
That server can handle a fair bit of traffic.
It is Linux not MS Bloatware....

6 weeks
Microsoft's site performance has sucked *royally* for the past 6 weeks. Even trying to use TechNet has been a pain, often requiring multiple reloads just to get to a document link.
You'd think they could handle their own bandwidth and networking requirements ... but I guess they are too busy screwing people to give a rats @zz

Updates on XP as of 12/23/01
I did post a monster 25.5 + meg file for those looking for all the
updates on XP both Pro and Home
www.bagpipes.net/files/xp-utilities/x86WinXP.zip
There are 23 updates in this file
Directories are pretty well intact as I got them from MS
I did prune the tree depth.... (grin)
There is also 23 info links back to the MS site
I did not try and d/l any of the extra drivers on the XP site
that are used for all the accessories... NIC cards, scanners
and other devices
Since only the cream of the crop hang out here, the manual installs
should be no problem and MS cannot fix there slow site.
