xwindows
xwindows is kinda slow. It depends on if you are running kde or gnome though. In each, there are ways to turn off the "bells and whistles" to speed up the system. Run the system settings program for whichever client you are running, and make sure you turn off everything like anitmated icons and things like that.

That is with KDE running, and I didn't have to change any settings down to lesser variants.
