    Linux Development

Where is a good place to get develoment tools, programming tutorials, for R.H. 7.1, also are there any major ISP's that support Linux. Like Juno, or ATT somthing like that. I was finally able to do a partition on the labtop last night . Yeah Happy New Year. But my two problems are no internet, and I don't know how to write programs for Linux. I know how to program for Windows and that's all. I want to brach out to Linux. SO help me!

JBuilder is free from Borland. Great UI, the best, I think. Can be a little tricky to install, as it doesn't support all distributions. Not RH 7.1, anyway. But you'll get it working.

Actually, Linux usually comes with a compiler -- gcc or g++. Depending if you want to do C or C++. Since Linux/Unix was written in C I'd recommend getting to know that. If you take a look at Amazon you should find a listing of some books on Linux programming.

This site might also help: http://www.linux-development.org/ (although its in german)

Sorry Can't speak German, or read it. But yeah I noticed the Compiler. Right now I'm using the KDE desktop setup or whatever. I like it better then Gnome so far. I think I need some good reading tutorials.

Also To my other part of my question about the Linux supported ISP's are there Any?

As for internet on linux, you need a real (hardware) modem and not a Winmodem, although I would've thought that laptops with PC Card modems should be hardware modems, not Winmodems to be honest.

Once you have a hardware modem, you can use Kppp to set up an internet connection from KDE, or various other tools from Gnome or other window managers. I'm sure there's a way of doing it from the command line as well, but I can't remember what it is.

YEah the modem is not a winmodem, Linux was able to un lock it and dial up. But I don't have a ISP that supports linux and needed to know if there were any major ISP's that do support so I could get that up and going on the net.

What ISP do you use? There is no reason that I can see why it would not support Linux...

I use AOL. yeah yeah laugh as much as you guys want. But it provides a good service. Anyway I don't pay the bill, and I didn't pick the ISP out. So I'm not to blame. My mother is a mainstream yuppie she has to have what everyone else has. It's not fair but she thinks it's great.

Hmm, and AOL don't allow connections from Linux?

Well I thought AOL didn't like Microsoft 'cause AOL Time Warner are trying to take over everything... much like Microsoft!
