I use a simple bit of javascript to stop my 'website' email address being harvested for spam. It's worked very well so far, I haven't recieved any spam to this address after more than 2 years.
The benefit of this is that people can still click on the mailto link and they'll get the intended response but spam-bots can't understand the format and therefore ignore the address.

<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript">
<!-- Begin
user = "feedback";
site = "website.com";
document.write('<a href=\"mailto:' + user + '@' + site + '\">');
document.write(user + '@' + site + '</a>');
// End -->
</SCRIPT>
</CENTER>

I remembered seeing something scary about spam generated from web page email links,
The full story can be found here
In short a deeply buried email address on a website generated SPAM 8 hours after it was spotted, this lead up to daily spam in the email.
An interesting story and yet more incentive to protect your email address's from the bottom feeding SPAM sending bastards.

I wonder if larger companies are going to put monster anti spam engines in place. Then, when the garbage comes to them they can send back a huge stream and bounce the spammer offline.

If you reside in the U.S and a person send's you 200 copies of the same message, you can report the spammer to the F.B.I. Seriously, the F.B.I has a National Computer Crime Squad in Washington, D.C phone number is 202-325-9164 or e-mail them at nccs@fbi.gov
hope this helps hahaha

Thats fine for throw-away email accounts, the problems really occur when you have 'permanant' address's (like domain names etc), when you start getting spam, it doesn't stop, it builds and builds and builds.
I recieve at least 10-20 Spam emails each and every day (some days I get around 50-100), the really stupid thing is that 95% are useless (US Mortgage & Credit Card companies, lot's of chinese and foriegn mail that I can't read even if I wanted to, etc etc).
I would love to see spam regulated and stopped, it's annoying and invasive.
A couple of other tips for dealing with spam...
1. It's better to just delete the message rather than reply or try and use an 'opt-out' service, most opt-out's are just a way of validating your address and ensuring that you recieve even more spam.
2. Beware html email, if the email has linked graphics then your email address can be validated that way (the only ways round this are... read your email off-line or try and filter off the spam before you download it to your machine)
Have fun and don't get Spammed!
