    Lightbulb gnome

    downloaded this today and popped it on wkstn. Looks real slick, already like it better than cde.

    If anyone is interested, it is 1.4 on Solx86.

    already thinking about version 2 coming out for sol 9

    Very simply put. A desktop inviroment sort of like Windows. In other words. A graphical interface for Linux.

    they were designed for people who cant let go of their mouse and HAVE to HAVE GUI.. so yeah.. especially for those who just left Windows and started in Linux.. so you have two choices of GUI Interface, gnome or KDE..

    I prefer KDE coz it has more toys to play wid than gome.. hahaha

    I think both GNOME and KDE uses x-windows for their GUI look..

    GNOME and KDE run ON x-windows. . .

    It's like this:
    X is the skeleton, KDE or GNOME are the flesh and muscles that you see.

    Gnome and KDE do not run on windows, they are not associated with it in any way. Gnome and KDE are Graphical User Interfaces, for Linux. To explain that very crudely, they are the pictures that Linux uses for people who like their OS to look "neat" and so that they can keep on holding on to their mouse, like sonic said.

    3ntropy, llipschutz said X-Windows and not Windows. GNOME and KDE are what are called desktop environments for X. The real difference between GNOME and KDE is the API used. GNOME uses an opensource API called tk (and it's extensions gtk and gtk+) while KDE uses another API called Qt. Qt was originally a properitery API which was why development on GNOME started as someone wanted a totally open desktop environment. However, the KDE project itself was conceived as an alternative to CDE (Common Desktop Environment), which was a commercial project. However, Trolltech has now decided to release Qt under the GPL and thus, the whole point of starting the GNOME project is defeated. The GNOME project is just too far along to stop now, though and development on both KDE and GNOME continues. I personally, prefer KDE but I have a feeling that GNOME 2.0 will kick a$$ (considering the major improvements from version1.2 to version 1.4).
