    Define Hacker. . .

    Just a simple, opinionated question.
What is a hacker defined by you.
And what makes a hacker a hacker.

    My response would be,
A hacker is one who has a never ending urge to figure out how things work.
    &
A hacker is only a hacker when they want to know how things work to help it be better for himself, and sometimes others. NOT to destroy it or ruin it.

erm, that didn't need to be two posts...anyway, I don't think you'll get any sort of consesus from people, as there seem to be so many varying definations.

Hacker- A hacker is someone who loves learning and exploring computer and network systems. Most of these people often go on to become systems programmers or administrators, security consultants etc...

Crackers- We specialize in "cracking" system security. Most crackers, spend all their time finding and exploiting system security holes.

At the end of the night which type of "person" are you depends on your ethics, and whether you are breaking the law or not.

A hacker is someone who finds it necessary to see just how far technology can go. He (not meant in a gender-biased way......but sadly, it's generally the case that females don't seem to want to hack ) will overclock his CPU.......get the fastest hardware he can get his hands on.......generally do anything he can to eke the least bit of performance out of his system. It doesn't even necessarily have to be with a computer, though.........it's possible to hack a car, for extra performance, or really anything. Being a hacker is mostly a state of mind. It's a willingness to learn as much as possible about something, and working with it to see how far it can go.

What is a hacker? How do you define hacker? What makes some one a hacker?
These are age old questions and have been brought up several times..
None the less, here's my 2 cents. A hacker is some one with a thirst for knowledge
powered by curiosity. Always asking questions. Why? How? What if..? ,Etc.
Most of the people here at AO classify hackers as either a white hat, grey hat, or black hat.
A hacker IMO is also some one who would go to great lengths to find out information. There's many definitions of what the word hacker means and how people define the word.

well according to me a hacker is a person.. who.. has deep thirst for
knowledge adn learning.. and he is a person who is extremly curious..
to know something... and how things happen...
he is a person who will never destroy anything but will point out the
    flaws in them...
    and who makes them hackers??
then for this i will say... only the curiousity and urge of learning..
    makes them hackers...

    intruder...

I gotta go with nabylbt. Hackers are persons who arn't satisfied with the knowledge fed to us. Hackers must take things apart and find out how they work. Hackers push the limits of technology and force it to be improved. Hackers are the revolution.
