    keystroke logging puts mob away

The government upholds a case against a mobster in NJ - the major point of contention in this case was keystroke logging. More here...

"This case was really our first glimpse into the extraordinary new technical capabilities that law enforcement is going to have," said David Sobel, general counsel of the privacy advocate group Electronic Privacy Information Center.

I'm aware that this guy was Mafioso but I still see it as another loss for freedom. It's beyond me how a Government agency can install keylogging software on suspicion only....

i thought it was kind of odd that the judge made a distinction between keyboard logging and wiretapping.

I guess there really is a difference between letter of the law and spirit of the law...

Its also kinda cool that so many of you guys are politically/legally astute. Seeings as how i graduated with degrees in political science and history, i never expected to have these kinds of discussions on a tech board. Makes this site that much more enjoyable (for me anyway).

I totally agree with the war on terror, but my hope/fear is that it wont be used as a vehicle to erode our personal freedoms...

the pendulem is always swinging to either extreme...I wonder why it cant find a place right down the center???

What's the difference between the gestapo tapping your phone or installing a keylogger? They probably needed to get a warrent before doing it, so I bet they had probable cause... I'm not defending them doing this, but it's not big news considering they've been doing that to our phones for a while now.

Does that make it acceptable? I think not.

I dont want to start another one of these "Carnivore" type threads as it's been done to death on the forums. Every citizen has the right to privacy, unless of course, you are a known criminal or breaking the law. But who decides exactly what is criminal "activity"? If I send a friend an email that contains a carnivore keyword am I then monitored because of "probable cause"?

I remember reading an article on Security Focus about Nicodemo Scarfo Jr's case. That was about the same time that everyone was talking about Magic Lantern!

If you guys felt a little uneasy about Keylogging, read some of these:
