    Almost giving these kids RedBoxes

I went to Fort Discovery and in this one area they were explaining the many ways sound travels. They had everything from phones to peaple yelling and anyways this one area there was this game where you had to match two sets of tones and so I tried it but after awhile I began to notice how the tone matching game was near the phones. If some kid who has heard about phreaking walks in he will think this is RedBox heaven. What do you guys think about this?

i think its malarky. phreaking is almost as dead as win3.1 im sure it can still be done, but with all the advancements in technology etc no one seems to have a user for it :shrugs: dont know, i guess you could be right..

phreaking has become normal hacking today... everything is digital today and thus a computer is needed to hack it...
phreaking was the time of the blue box and war dialers...

Phreaking will never die. Just because you don't deface a website so everyone knows who you are doesn't meant that no one is doing it. It is acually very prevelat still, but it has remained underground a lot better. You don't see a lot of script kiddie phone phreaks, because there is no such thing. If you think phreaking is dead, look at the PLA (no, I am not talking about the Palastine Liberation Aliance). A lot of it has moved to cell phones instead of land lines, but it hapens as much (if not more) then it did during the age of the red and blue boxes.

btw The Specialist...I think you mean blue box heaven. Red boxes simulated the tones from plancing money in a pay phone. Blue boxes simulated phone tones....

i think ur right.. I've seen a lot of interesting cell phone hacks the last couple of years and yes I guess that's the modern way of phreaking.. I haven't however been paying that much attention to the world of phreaking for many years but it's still a great skill... but u must admit that the line between hacking and phreaking has become much thinner... many cell phone hacks requires u to mess around with the chips and u do that like u would hack so many other things... some things will still be pure phreaking though (can't think of any right now.. but when the alcohol leaves my body I'm sure I'll find some)...

Phreaking is not dead. Many countries still have phreakable telephone networks, just not the ones you (mostly) live in.

Wardialling is certainly not dead, any many companies who are very security concious overlook the importance of telephone security.

I think the thing which mostly killed phreaking is that phone calls are now so cheap that you may as well just pay for them (Well certainly in the UK; I believe in the USA they're even cheaper in some cases)

phreaking is not dead, however you're right, the line between phreaking and hacking has become very unclear now days. these days you can't really phreak payphones because the technology is too new so its a little less likely to see the phreakers
I did not come here to tell you how it is going to end, I came here to tell you how it was going to begin. I\'m going to hang up this phone, then I\'m going to tell these people what you don\'t want them to hear.

One thing Specialist, red boxing can not be done any more so it would be impossible for a kid there to use the tones for a red box.

PHreaking is not dead just in the shadows. It is not used as much anymore. but you can still do some of the things that were commonly know to phreaking. Phreaking can also deal with other technologies. example a way around biometrics could deal with phreaking issues.
