The file sharing wav (no pun intended) has become worrisome; is it or is it not safe to use peer to peer file sharing clients to download music??? The RIAA is pulling every stop they can to catch those who are infringing on copyright laws. Here are some links I came across myself. You be the judge.

They don't need to hack into your computer to know that you're (illegally) downloading of p2p-networks... all they need is a law that allows them to consult ISP-logs... oh wait...
And if there is a law that allows them to find out who is downloading from let's say Kazaa, then there probably also is a law that makes it illegal to download from Kazaa (oh wait... :/)... if it is illegal to download from Kazaa, and if the RIAA is allowed to find out about it, then there probably also is a law that allows them to confiscate your box... they wouldn't be hacking your box, they'd be sueing your ass because you're breaking the law... and that'd be legal... unlike (illegally!) downloading music...

My logic might be flawed, though

An IP? To do what? To find the ISP's? They're in the Yellow Pages...
Or do you connect to another's computer without using your ISP? P2P doesn't literally mean point-2-point... unless you have a lot of money, you'll need your ISP :/
Kazaa is a network that doesn't (unlike Napster) use central servers. That doesn't mean you don't need an ISP, though... :/

The method used by the RIAA does not in any way that I know of involve "hacking" your computer in any way. Getting your IP is not illegal...it only becomes illegal when an exploit is used to access your system.

look,if the US of A decided that they the RIAA what they want and make themtake logs and what ever.The company/program would then probably move to a foreign nation(only on paper,if you know what i mean) and then there is no way that the US of A could force them to take logs , and if they cant take logs they cant find the ppl downloading it , so they have to go
DOOR to DOOR and check each and every box.


So now my prediction is , since you ARE AMERICA, and AMERICa is known for making stupid laws then making the world believe that those laws are good, i would say

There will be a LICENSE that ppl have to get , guess what, not any license, a license
with the name :COMPUTER-LICENSE.

Thats how i see it, now think if you had to register your PC(jus like your TV, and CAR) then
they would probably make a "agreement" that they have full right to inspect your computer at any time.

Now, if they had full right over your computer,they would design a program/system that would continuely search ,via internet connection, through all of these registered PC's for any "illigle"
material, like trjans,porn,music,EVEN personal OFFENSIVE TEXT FILES(wich may "effect the gov")

then its WORLD WAR E, like they say,ONLY IN AMERICA

HEy ive got an idea guys. Dont worry about it. if you are not breaking any laws then the RIAA and DCMA have absolutely nothing to do with you. It seems to me that the only people who would be worried about this are the people who have something to hide. As for your question jag they could do it any nhumber of ways. Look at what mettalica did with napster. They had a group of people go through and search for people with metallica files and then submited that list of names to napsters administration. It wouldnt be that much harder to do that with individual isp's. and no its not illegat to find out someones ip address. If it was why would windows ship with "netstat"? Ive allready recieved a e-mail from my isp regarding this subject. It was just a form letter that they sent to all their customers. It basicaly said that if the RIAA comes to this with evidence that a certain ip is pirating music and warez they WILL give the RIAA information nescesary to prosecute. So for all you folks out there that want to continue this illegal activity the just remeber BIG BROTHER is watching and the people that provide your bandwidth tocommit this crime may turn into your undoing.

What is so important about music that people can't just do without it?
If a significant number of fans simply refused to buy another CD until the
matter was resolved acceptably, those RIAA weasles would be kissing a lot
of A$$ overnight. Problem solved.


P.S. If they could get their way, they would make it illegal for you to remember
a song and hum it to yourself, so I take with a grain of salt all the tough talk about
file sharing being "illegal".
