HSC stands for HIGHER SCHOOLS CERTIFICAT

http://hsc.csu.edu.au/

It is basically the last 2 years of your schooling life (excluding turshery) is dedacated to it, year 11 is your prelim year and if you pass that you can undertake the HSC course year 12, you at the end of the year sit exams for the courses that you take, these are marked state wide. It is also how you get your rank for uni.
