Data Recovery starter?
Could someone point me in the right direction of some popular freeware data recovery tools, and/or sites? Its something I've been wanting to get into, but haven't had a need to until now. I just got a few hard drives to mess around with, thought it would be cool to see whats on them before i use them for myself. Thanks

Give this site a try :
SourceForge
is the world's largest Open Source software development website, with the largest repository of Open Source code and applications available on the Internet.
So there is a good chance that you will find what you need.
Hope that helps you.

There are a few tutorials on AO that deal with data recovery and forensics... should be all the information and links you need.

also one of my friends told me about a program called disk investigator that was used for data recovery but i am not sure how well it works cause i never used it (i believe that it brings the stuff back in hex or binary, but i can not recall as i was just informed about it but never used it.)

Disk investigator is a nice tool, but it's a bit basic. It's only for recovering deleted files, not for recovering fscked partitions.
