if i understand what you are trying to say correctly is that you were in an internet cafe and you launched a DoS attack - which meant that the PC you were using seemed to ahve a better connection than those around you (or something to that effect)
well because you would have been generating alot of traffic then your PC would have sucked up alot of the available bandwith....taking it from the other computers and slowing their connections.
This however is a pretty dumb thing to be involved in - DoS aint l337 just shows you to be a complete lamer

depends upon the speed of the computer you are launching the attack from and that of the victim - someone on a 5meg line could DoS a 56k(er) np and thats just a single PC
But what you were doing is still lame - I can understand a need to learn new things etc but this is not the way to go about it. If you want to learn more about the kiddie tools and how they are used test them on your home network.
For a start you were basially costing the other people in the cafe money. They pay to go online normally with a set charge per 30mins - you reduce their connection speeds they cannot load pages as quickly and as time is money as far as they are concerned you are costing them.
You even said yourself people were becoming irritated - you may want to learn but you cannot do so while being nasty to tohers

STEEL, let's get straight to the point, and let's be honest. Do you want to learn about computers and network security, or get kicks out of DoSing? Either way we welcome you to the forums, but you will get a much kinder and fuller responce if you choose to learn rather than just illegally attack people.
We will help you start off, if that is what you seek, but you have to be ready to set aside acts of illegality so that you can properly learn, while staying out of jail for it. Give it some thought, please.

for home users there really is little point esp those on dial-up as they will have a dynamic IP (everytime they connect they are assigned a new IP addy by their ISP)
also disabling ping will only protect against one form of DoS (or DDoS) but as home users are not really going to be targets of such an attack it shouldn't be too much of a worry.
Webservers etc that may be more likly to be attacked can use things such as routers to filter out bad packets and prevent them reaching the server.
to read more about it try here :: http://grc.com/dos/drdos.htm

Fighting fire with fire only enrages a fire further, burning with an even hotter disposition and creating a wider range of it's destructive power, and consequences. Learning new things is fine, but someone taught me something very important... it is very hard to learn while in jail. Why not learn a proper and legal way, by asking tons of questions, reading tons of tutorials, and then experimenting on yourself?
