How would you be able to tell if you were being cracked at during the time while you were using th ecomputer? Would you immediately see things change? And is it possible to hack into somebodies account on XP even if they are logged off?

There are a few ways to tell, and it depends upon the kind of attack. My question to you, good stickman, is what founds these kinds of questions? If you are planning illegal activity then heed my warning: It is hard to learn anything behind the solid steel bars of a prison cell. If of course you are asking out of simple curiosity to learn, then forgive my seemingly overbearing warning. But do be honest, as we shall be honest with you.

Now the first question has been talked about before and the command netstat poped up. You can't see everything with it. So now would be a good time for words like firewalls, IDS, & (ect) to come into play. Also please define what you mean by changes. Changes could be anything from changes in your log files to suddenly being backdoored and then seeing some stupid and goofy graphical payload.

Hey... anything can happen. Esspecially if you are standing right next to everything includeing the freaking box.

As |The|Specialist has implied, a lot would depend on what the cracker was doing. I suspect that you mean "would I see anything"? rather than information from logfiles?

At best you might notice hard drive activity and modem activity from the flashing lights. You might also notice high CPU usage if you are monitoring this. This would only be of use whilst you were not doing anything, otherwise your activity would mask that of the cracker.

If your computer is switched on and connected to the network you are vulnerable to a remote attack. You do not have to be logged on. If you think about it, Administrators maintain machines remotely over a network when the users have gone home.........all they need is for the machine to be switched on and connected to the network.
